Retina™

Autonomy Retina™ is a web interface application that in one easy-to-use solution provides a full scale of retrieval methods, from simple keyword search to sophisticated conceptual matching. Adjusting to the user's experience and proficiency, Retina not only offers basic legacy search methods but also leverages them through Autonomy's unique pattern-recognition technology. An intuitive interface further ensures user comfort and allows administrators to configure Retina with minimal effort, while Autonomy's Intellectual Asset Protection System guarantees secure access.

Features

Retrieval

Retina provides conceptual querying, Boolean search, Parametric Search, Field search and Agents. Results are presented with summaries, hyperlinks to similar information, query suggestions and site agents, generated automatically and in real-time.

Conceptual queries

Natural language queries that return references to conceptually similar documents. Conceptual querying includes:

  • Query by example
  • Query refinement by example
  • Keyword search
  • Wildcard search
  • Query language specification
  • Soundex algorithm
  • Federated search
  • Result restriction by date, source, conceptual relevance and fields
  • Result sorting by date, conceptual relevance, database or clusters
  • Automatic suggestion of result related content
  • Automatic suggestion of alternative queries
  • Site agents
  • Agent creation from results
  • Fast query speeds

Boolean search

A standard Boolean or bracketed Boolean search using Boolean or Proximity operators. Boolean searching includes:

  • Boolean operators AND, NOT, OR, EOR, XOR
  • Proximity operators NEAR, DNEAR, WNEAR, BEFORE and AFTER
  • Bracketed expressions
  • Query refinement by example
  • Wildcard search
  • Query language specification
  • Result restriction by date, source, conceptual relevance and fields
  • Result sorting by date, conceptual relevance, database or clusters
  • Automatic suggestion of result related content
  • Automatic suggestion of alternative queries
  • Site agents
  • Agent creation from results
  • Fast query speeds

Parametric search

Search for items by their characteristics (values in certain fields). When you provide fixed values in parametric fields, the parametric search returns consistent values in the non-fixed parametric fields. For example, you can search for specific wine varieties from a specific region by specifying which fields must match these characteristics, so that only wines that are of the specified variety and from the specified region are returned. Parametric searching includes:

  • Parametric field search
  • Query by example
  • Query refinement by example
  • Wildcard search
  • Result restriction by date, source, conceptual relevance and fields
  • Result sorting by date, conceptual relevance, database or clusters
  • Automatic suggestion of result related content
  • Automatic suggestion of alternative queries
  • Agent creation from results
  • Fast query speeds

Agents

Agents provide customized on-the-fly retrieval of data that is crucial to users' personal requirements:

  • Create agents from results
  • Agent refinement by example
  • Automatic suggestion of result related content
  • Agent creation from results
  • Fast query speeds

Field search

Field searches return documents that contain specific values in specific fields. Field searching includes:

  • Query refinement by example
  • Wildcard search
  • Query language specification
  • Soundex algorithm
  • Result restriction by date, source, conceptual relevance and fields
  • Result sorting by date, conceptual relevance, database or clusters
  • Automatic suggestion of result related content
  • Automatic suggestion of alternative queries
  • Site agents
  • Agent creation from results
  • Fast query speeds

Hyperlinking

Hyperlinks point to related documents. Because links are automatically inserted at the time a document is retrieved, they can include references to documents written long after the original document was published.

  • Suggest relevant documents
  • Eliminate the cost of maintaining unstructured information through a manual process
  • Reduce time to navigate to related information

Summarization

Summaries of results are created automatically in realtime.

  • Quick summaries
  • Conceptual summaries
  • Contextual summaries

Query Suggestions

Alternative queries are automatically generated when queries are executed, permitting quick production of a variety of relevant results sets.

  • On-the-fly execution of suggested queries
  • Intuitive prompting facilitates quick expansion of relevant results

Site Agents

When queries are executed, Retina automatically generates site agents from 3rd party search engines' web directory categories, providing a wide variety of additional sources.

  • Instant display of multiple 3rd party information
  • Automatic suggestion of further information

IAS Security

Autonomy's IAS (Intellectual Asset Protection System) provides an integrated security solution to protect your data. At the front end, authentication checks that users are allowed to access the system on which result data is displayed. At the back end, entitlement checking and authentication combine to ensure that query results only comprise documents that the user is allowed to see, from repositories that the user is allowed to access.

The Retina Retrieval front end application can be configured to use the security details for users and data in order to ensure that users are only given access to documents that they are allowed to see.

  • User Authentication
  • User Entitlement
  • Secure Communications
  • Secure Access
  • External Secure Site Access

Front end interfaces

Retina provides an intuitive administration and user interface that allows both administrators and end users to use the different retrieval types that Retina offers. Out of the box, the interface can be displayed in a number of languages, providing usability on an international level without the need for time consuming configuration.

  • Interface based on JSP (Java Server Pages)
  • Uses Autonomy ACI API to communicate with back end components

User Access

  • User identification through login, with optional integration with LDAP, SSL LDAP and NT authentication (IIS compatible only)
  • Authentication against Lotus Notes, Exchange etc. available on request

User Interface

Retina administrators can configure the user interface to provide end users with the most basic or more sophisticated Retina retrieval features, matching the level of user proficiency. While critical administrative actions are only available to administrators, users are permitted to perform minor administrative maintenance:

  • Password change
  • Account details edit
  • Security information update

Administrator Interface

The administrative interface provides administrators with a single platform from which they can use the Retina's retrieval features, determine the content and style of the Retina user interface, administer Retina functionality and maintain Retina components:

  • Configure field display
  • Hyperlink fields
  • Enable / disable field searchability
  • Configure component connections
  • Enable / disable retrieval features
  • Customize Retina's display style
  • Customize query handling
