Akin Gump Switches to Interwoven for Ground-Breaking Approach to Managing Firm Content

AmLaw 100 Firm Replaces Legacy Hummingbird Implementation with Interwoven to Organize, Find, and Govern Content

SAN JOSE, Calif., - October 20, 2008 - Interwoven, Inc. (NASDAQ: IWOV), a global leader in content management solutions, today announced law firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP selected the full Interwoven suite of legal industry solutions to create and deliver a unified and comprehensive information management system for its 2,400 employees in 12 offices throughout the world. Akin Gump - known for its innovation and forward-thinking - will leverage Interwoven's proven approach to drive firm productivity and growth.

In an era of exploding electronic content and global expansions, while striving to improve client service, law firms are looking to tune their working practices in ways that fundamentally make it faster and easier for fee-earners to get work done and collaborate with other fee-earners across the globe and with clients. Additionally, given the current economic climate, firms are under greater pressure to eliminate inefficiencies while driving stronger business results. A unified and comprehensive approach to information management is core to improving working practices while reducing overall costs - from the ability to organize content simply and logically, to searching documents quickly and accurately, to governing the content to meet retention goals.

"Interwoven understands the challenges professional services firms face today and has the solutions and the people to take us from vision to reality in a short time," said Lorey Arthur Hoffman, CIO of Akin Gump. "We view our strategic vendors as partners and look for a demonstrated track record of collaboration with customers to innovate and improve products that meet real needs and work habits. This is one of the main reasons we made the switch from Hummingbird to Interwoven."

Hoffman, who previously served as a Partner at KPMG LLP and managed information technology at the U.S. Department of Treasury, currently is leading an ambitious effort to make Akin Gump one of the first law firms that is completely electronic - from voicemail to working documents to records. By managing the entire lifecycle of all documents in a truly paperless environment, Akin Gump plans to gain financial efficiencies, and improve productivity and client responsiveness.

"Akin Gump is at the forefront of a shift within the legal industry toward working practices that rely primarily on the electronic file to provide the single version of the truth. Critical to that vision is the ability for users to file any type of document or e-mail with ease, the ability to share and find documents effortlessly, and the ability to govern all of this content to manage costs and risk," said Neil Araujo, vice president of professional services industry solutions marketing at Interwoven. "Interwoven WorkSite, Interwoven Universal Search, and Interwoven RecordsManager were built to work together to deliver end users a simple solution to a complex and sometimes overwhelming problem. Akin Gump's influence in the legal industry is unparalleled, and we look forward to working with them as they become the model for the firm of the future."

Akin Gump is replacing its current vendor, OpenText (previously Hummingbird), to use the following Interwoven products:

  • Interwoven WorkSite: Interwoven WorkSite uses familiar desktop applications to deliver document and sophisticated e-mail management capabilities, making it easy to capture, organize, and share all the business-critical content associated with a project, matter, or engagement. Virtual folders in a centralized repository provide a shared environment for storing documents - both paper and electronic - records, e-mail messages, and other media as well as a system for tracking updates, milestones, and communications.
  • Interwoven Universal Search: An intuitive enterprise search solution uniquely designed to meet the demands and expectations of professional services firms. By providing professionals with a solution for instantly locating important content throughout a firm, Interwoven is delivering a powerful tool to improve firm efficiency and enhance the client experience. Interwoven Universal Search - Professional Services Edition is powered by Vivisimo Velocity.
  • Interwoven Records Manager: An information governance system that enables firms to manage the retention and logistics of all forms of records: physical, electronic, and e-mail - even those in other systems. Interwoven Records Manager gives firms the ability to manage retention policy and apply it to information assets in WorkSite and other systems. Additionally it also provides support for legal holds, archival, destruction, transfer, periodic review, and other customer-defined processes.
