Survey Highlights IT's Looming Challenge

Explosive Increase in Online Marketing Investments Pushing Archaic Manual Processes of Managing Web Applications to the Brink

GearUp 2007, London, UK - October 16, 2007 - Interwoven, Inc. (NASDAQ: IWOV), a global leader in content management solutions, today announced the results of a global survey of IT professionals to determine how they are coping with the growing development of composite or custom Web applications to drive their online business. Interwoven conducted the survey in order to find out how IT's "unsung heroes" are managing the increasing volume of change requests to custom Web applications. The survey revealed that most companies are struggling to properly manage releases, ad hoc fixes, and global distribution in the time required to be competitive online, especially as rapidly shifting customer expectations and increased pressure to speed time-to-place a greater burden on IT.

According to the research:

"Custom Web application growth shows no sign of slowing"

  • The vast majority (77 percent) of development efforts are focused on custom Web applications
  • Over half of respondents will at least double the number of custom Web applications in the next year

"Most companies depend on "push and pray" processes"

  • 70 percent are doing this manually via FTP, build scripts, mailing CDs, or by copying files

"Time-to-Web lags far behind market expectations"

  • More than half said that it takes two or more days per release
  • 73 percent can only do one to two releases per month

"Too much time wasted fighting fires"

  • 54 percent say they do up to 10 hot fixes a month

"This survey truly reflects what we've been hearing from customers for years. Huge amounts of resources are pumped into the development of exciting, progressive Web applications, and yet the IT department is like the cobbler's children, having to provision these major releases and updates using duct tape and sheer ingenuity," said Heidi Lorenzen, vice president of corporate and international marketing, at Interwoven. "These findings get at the heart of why we developed the Interwoven Custom Application Provisioning solution, which gives our customers a significant competitive advantage by increasing time-to-Web. As a result the "unsung heroes" of IT have become "IT superheroes."

As the battle for online business intensifies, the survey showed marketing and eBusiness groups request the majority of new and enhanced custom Web application requests. More than ever, companies need to react quickly to market and customer demands- rolling out new Web applications or changing and enhancing existing ones can help companies acquire high-value customers and grow revenue from existing ones.

As the sheer volume of custom Web applications increases, enterprises need to automate the delivery of code, content, and configuration to speed time-to-Web, reduce IT costs, and ensure compliance. Yet, according to the research, 71 percent of respondents use some sort of manual approach, such as FTP scripts, build tools, mailing CDs to datacenters, or copying files.

According to one respondent, "We were rolling out a large hot fix at 3 am one night, and the hosting engineer and I both fell asleep on the phone waiting for files to load."

These manual processes are extremely labor- and time-intensive which has a major impact on a company's time-to-Web, business agility, and IT costs. Forty-six percent of respondents said that it takes two or more days to fully provision a major release, which in turn has limited the vast majority of respondents (73 percent) to just one or possibly two releases per month. Additionally, a majority of respondents (60 percent) feel pressure to issue releases more frequently.

Manual change management is also error prone, with 54 percent of respondents having to do up to ten hot fixes in a month, and 41 percent doing more than ten. With a well managed provisioning process that enables rapid updates and changes, hot fixes should be the exception rather than the expected. Yet 62 percent of the respondents depend on priority-based processes to manage "fire drills" associated with hot fixes.
