AUTONOMY PLAYS VITAL ROLE IN SUCCESS OF FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HISTORIC PRESERVATION LEARNING PORTAL

IDOL Technology Helps Fulfill U.S. President's Management Agenda for E-Government and E-Learning

Cambridge, UK and San Francisco, Calif. - Jan. 30, 2007 - Autonomy Corporation plc (LSE: AU. or AU.L), a global leader in infrastructure software for the enterprise, today announced that the Federal Preservation Institute, a program of the National Park Service, has integrated its IDOL enterprise infrastructure software into the Historic Preservation Learning Portal, www.historicpreservation.gov. The Autonomy IDOL technology is used to facilitate cross-agency collaboration and connect hundreds and thousands of citizens and government officials to historic and cultural information. Buan Consulting was the system integrator on the Portal.

The Historic Preservation Learning Portal is a co-operative multi-agency project aimed at assisting the U.S. federal agencies in meeting their responsibilities under the National Historic Preservation Act and Executive Order 13287, Preserve America (2003). On the leading edge of an emerging e-government and e-learning trend, this encompassing Portal provides a single access point for the detailed information needed to care for the national inventory of more than 100,000 places and 300,000 archaeological sites on Federal land, as well as thousands of other historic properties affected each year by Federal actions. Furthermore, this portal offers up-to-date information on laws governing the Federal management of historic and cultural places, as well as updated training materials that are shared with agency preservation officers, contractors, and the general public. The Historic Preservation Learning Portal is the only Internet site that can locate and organize cultural resources information around the world regardless of language or data format.

"One of the major goals of the Historic Preservation Learning Portal is to fulfill the U.S. President's management agenda for e-government and e-learning," said Dr Constance Ramirez, director, Federal Preservation Institute. "It's viewed as a strategic project across the federal government. In fact, there were more than 17 federal agencies involved in the funding and selection of IDOL to power this portal. This is the largest cooperative federal e-gov project and a testament to both the value of the portal and the Autonomy technology."

Linked with more than 1,000 historic preservation-related public Web sites, the Portal's fundamental design and operating principles aim to foster cross-agency collaboration and information sharing. It provides a quality online experience that meets the expectations of different constituents such as the 57 states and territories, tribes, local governments, agency stakeholders, and citizens, on a 24x7 basis.

With the Autonomy IDOL technology, the National Park Service is able to make information on historic preservation available quickly and easily to all users. Its powerful clustering and categorization features mean that users obtain information in its original form, and the Portal does not have to contend with costly re-formatting or storage of data. Government officials across the nation now have mission-critical information readily available on their desktops to help them to solve problems, find alternative solutions, and to comply with local, state, and federal requirements.

Autonomy IDOL is the only platform that offers users the ability to conduct plain language queries using concept-based search. "Autonomy concept-based search is critical. The vast majority of our users don't know the jargon and terminology included in these preservation documents. While some, or about one thousand, of our users have education and experience in historic preservation, approximately 200,000 users pick up their information on the job or through involvement with a specific project. As a result, keyword searches, which exclude the uninitiated, would not be satisfactory," continued Ramirez.

The National Park Service, through the work of the Federal Preservation Institute, is also leveraging the IDOL-based Expertise Recommendation solution to understand the meaning of an on-screen business document based on the concepts it contains, the person interacting with the document and the environmental context. Using this information, the Historic Preservation Learning Portal can instantly and automatically identify and link supporting content and experts with other relevant knowledge sources within the government to assist the user in quickly completing a task while concurrently increasing decision confidence.

With Autonomy IDOL, the National Park Service is able to facilitate cross-agency collaboration and expertise location. "The benefit of the IDOL technology is that knowledge created by experts can be reused or expanded upon to further enhance the body of knowledge upon which historic preservation decisions are made ," said Ramirez. "We are able to identify other knowledge workers who have similar interests and/or are experts in a given field by saving searches and comparing these saved searches with other user's saved searches. This is a major innovation in the use of the technology."

"The National Park Service and its partners have harnessed the capabilities of Autonomy IDOL in a way that can serve as a model for the deployment of the Autonomy product," said Dr Mike Lynch, Autonomy's chief executive officer. "We are pleased that our product has helped to foster cross-agency collaboration, as well as linked hundreds and thousands of citizens to key historic information."
