VIRAGE PATENT BOLSTERS AUTONOMY'S NUMBER OF PATENTS TO 110 WITH MORE THAN 50 APPLICATIONS PENDING

Virage awarded patent for video cataloger system with synchronized encoders

Cambridge, UK - October 2nd, 2006 - Virage, a wholly owned subsidiary of Autonomy Corporation plc (LSE: AU. or AU.L) and a leading supplier of Rich Media Management and Intelligent Video Analytics, today announced that it has been awarded yet another patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office for its innovative video cataloging technology. The video patents expand Autonomy's intellectual property portfolio to more than 110 patents with more than 50 applications pending.

This new patent safeguards Virage's innovative video cataloguer system with synchronized encoders (7,093,191). Under the system, video is simultaneously encoded and catalogued according to predefined or user defined metadata such as speech-to-text, scene, speaker, location, key-frame, image, on-screen text, face token and even concept. By automating these processes and offering such a comprehensive range of metadata, Virage ensures all multimedia is fully searchable at a granular level, in real-time.

"Autonomy has always stressed the importance of investing heavily in Research and Development and it is this belief that has led to our success," said Mike Lynch, Co-founder and CEO of Autonomy. "R&D investment is up more than 250% in 2006 and we aim to aggressively expand our patent portfolio in the future."

R&D centers in Silicon Valley, Dallas, Boston, Beijing and Cambridge, UK all contribute to the 110 plus patents collectively owned by the Autonomy Group.
