VIRAGE UNVEILS NEXT GENERATION OF AUTOMATIC VIDEO INDEXING FOR VIDEO SEARCH AND IPTV

Virage demonstrating proven video search technology at IBC 2006

Cambridge, UK, September 8th, 2006 - Virage, the world leader in Rich Media Management and Intelligent Video Analytics, today announced that it will be showing its range of next generation automatic indexing and encoding software at IBC 2006, one of the world's largest broadcasting and media shows. The new technology is already being used to power some of the largest video sites on the web such as blinkx which has more than five million hours of multimedia content, Lycos which has over 25 million visitors and AOL, BBC, CNN and Bloomberg. Virage will demoing its solutions at stand 3.121 throughout the show being held in Amsterdam, 8th-12th September.

The IPTV capabilities offered by Virage are unique and streamline the process of making broadcast content available over the Internet, benefiting broadcasters in terms of enhanced flexibility and reduced costs whilst enriching the consumer experience by allowing them the unprecedented freedom to create their "own" TV. For the first time, content consumers can pick and mix rich media clips as they please, eliminate material that is of no interest to them and receive alerts to new content as it appears in the media.

Virage offers the only technology in the world to automatically generate metadata from television, video or audio, eliminate the need to manually tag multimedia files and make it fully searchable in real-time. The range of metadata that can be created is unparalled and includes: speech-to-text, scene, speaker, location, keyframe, image, on-screen text, face, token and concept of content. Using Virage, multimedia can be treated in exactly the same way as text and cross-referenced with any other form of information in an organization. In addition, an extensive range of languages are fully supported by Virage including those which require double byte encoding capabilities, such as Arabic, Mandarin Chinese and Russian, as well as single byte European languages such as English, French and Spanish. Virage is the only technology on the market which allows users to search foreign multimedia in their native language; for example, using Virage, the content of Arabic broadcast streams can be searched in English and the content fully understood.

Virage has a strong record of investing heavily in R&D and $60m continues to be dedicated to developing the core engine every year. Consequently, the company is continually enhancing its full range of products including the Virage IPTV suite, VS Broadcast Monitoring, VS Radio Server, VS Archive, VideoLogger and Virage Security and Surveillance. In the near future Virage will be able not only to locate and identify companies, locations and people within multimedia but also extract facts, event significance, identify core or primary themes and even determine tonality and sentiment. In addition, full integration with Autonomy's latest release IDOL 7 will lead to a whole host of additional functionality.

Abigail Betley, Technical Manager for Virage commented: "We are very excited about demonstrating these new capabilities to visitors at IBC 2006. Our continued focus on R&D and communication with our customer base ensure that we are always one step ahead."
