UTRECHT UNIVERSITY LIBRARY SELECTS AUTONOMY TO ASSIST USERS IN NAVIGATING THEIR DIGITAL COLLECTION

Cambridge, England - 15 March 2006 - Autonomy Corporation plc (LSE: AU. or AU.L), a global leader in infrastructure software for the enterprise, today announced that Universiteitsbibliotheek Utrecht, the University Library of Utrecht in the Netherlands (UBU), has selected Autonomy to power its online digital collection. The site, which is located at omega.library.uu.nl, easily allows university students and staff to navigate the library's extensive digitized collection, containing over 10 million scientific manuscripts and journals in various languages. Autonomy's unique software produces a fully integrated system for the digital online collection that intelligently guides both administrative staff and library patrons through vast amounts of scientific information.

Utrecht University Library is a collaborative association of all departmental libraries within the university and houses one of the Netherlands' largest collections of books, reports and scholarly journals. Since an increasing number of libraries maintain a combination of physical and digital collections, the UBU wanted to complement its online catalogue with a separate area for its digital collection, ensuring effortless navigation of scientific articles. Autonomy's IDOL technology overcomes the old system's limitations by understanding the underlying concept behind any piece of information, automatically classifying digital documents and generating highly accurate taxonomies. Since library administrators are unable to manually categorize and tag the millions of articles that are input into the system, the software significantly improves access to the collection. In addition, Autonomy connects many disparate information repositories to UBU's Omega digital collection, providing a single, all-inclusive interface for users in several languages, including English, Dutch, French and German.

Given that most legacy based systems fail because they do not provide enough context and deliver too many generic results, Autonomy's Automated Query Guidance (AQG) solution affords considerable benefits for UBU. AQG guides keyword-oriented users to elaborate on their initial entry, dynamically inferring the conceptual ideas behind the terms and delivering targeted results. If a user types in 'biotechnology', for example, AQG will automatically suggest contexts within which the word appears, such as 'genetically modified agriculture', 'molecular biology' and 'health care'. If the user clicks on 'health care', the results would then focus on examples within this context and provide a further guidance list, 'stem cells', 'gene therapy' and 'breakthrough research', for example. The application is immensely valuable to UBU because Autonomy's unique technology helps provide the crucial framework that makes keyword searching viable in large, diverse subject repositories.

"As one of the largest libraries in the Netherlands, the UBU is committed to increasing online availability of our digital collections for our users," said Eric Sieverts, Innovation and Development Consultant at the Universiteitsbibliotheek Utrecht. "For patrons of the library, the online presence of information offers unlimited retrieval possibilities which were previously beyond our reach. Autonomy technology is helping UBU provide a more user-friendly experience for visitors and employees by making our collection of over 10 million digital records automatically accessible to all university students and staff, regardless of where they physically reside."

Ian Black at Autonomy, commented, "We are pleased with the successful implementation of Autonomy's IDOL software at the UBU. Autonomy already collaborates with numerous libraries throughout the world, providing state-of-the-art technology to assist in guiding users to the most relevant content. We continue to demonstrate how our software is improving libraries' catalogue systems, making them more comprehensive and facilitating better access to information."
