AUTONOMY'S CONSUMER DIVISION ANNOUNCES CREATION OF CONCEPTUAL INDEX OF WORLD WIDE WEB

Next generation index passes one billion item mark

Cambridge, England - 25 October 2005 - Autonomy Corporation plc (LSE: AU. or AU.L), a global leader in unstructured information processing, today announced that its consumer division has created a conceptual index of the World Wide Web. The index currently contains approximately one billion items, including web pages, audio, video and image files, and expansion continues rapidly. The index is available so consumer facing companies can offer their customers next generation search technologies across the Web. Also, for the first time enterprise users will be able to fully integrate retrieval, from the desktop to enterprise content to Internet content, based on the understanding of the meaning of the information, all on a private basis.

Autonomy's industry leading Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL) is able to understand the meaning of any type of content, including text, audio and video. When IDOL is integrated with Autonomy's consumer division's conceptual web index users can benefit from truly all available information, whether within the enterprise or on the World Wide Web.

The index was built on IDOL technology and brings next generation retrieval features to the web, including conceptual clustering, implicit query, video search and Autonomy's unique Automatic Query Guidance (AQG). Autonomy's AQG automatically returns categories of results based on the meaning of the query, providing an easy navigation facility directing users to the results they require based on a conceptual and contextual understanding of their query. AQG uses conceptual clustering to determine the context of a user's search. The user is instantly presented with the most appropriate result set along with other suggestions or related queries, even when starting with a few or single word queries and without any reliance on pre-existing link data.

Using AQG, for example, if a researcher for NASA queries for the word "apollo" the computer cannot immediately tell whether they are looking for the space program, the Greek deity or the famous theatre in Harlem. To present the user with the results they are most probably looking for, AQG uses conceptual clustering to assemble a single page containing the very best hits from each of the most relevant concepts, both from the intranet and the Web. Costs relating to the project were expensed in prior periods.

Dr. Mike Lynch, Autonomy group CEO and co-founder, commented, "Although consumers are well served today for keyword searches by current internet search engines, we are beginning to see the dawn of a new age of consumer information applications around video, mobile, implicit query and conceptual understanding. Autonomy brought a radical new approach to the enterprise search market in 1996 and its conceptual technology enabled it to become the leader in this sector. We believe the consumer space is now ready for the same treatment."

Dr. Lynch continued, "This initiative from Autonomy will allow our customers in the consumer space to provide services enabling consumers to have access to next generation search technologies such as implicit query, clustering and conceptual retrieval. In this regard Autonomy has been proud to work with consumer market leaders such as AOL, the BBC, National Basketball Association, DirecTV, CNN, Hutchison 3G, Sony and Vodafone."
