AUTONOMY POWERS INTRANET AT ENVIRONMENT AGENCY FOR ENGLAND AND WALES

Cambridge, England - 5 September 2005 - Autonomy Corporation plc (LSE: AU. or AU.L), a global leader in infrastructure software for the enterprise, today announced that the Environment Agency, the leading public body for protecting and improving the environment in England and Wales, has deployed Autonomy's technology to facilitate fast access to information on its Intranet, Easinet. Autonomy's advanced retrieval facilities help employees locate the latest information on environmental concerns speedily and effortlessly, allowing them to stay abreast of the latest research and developments to provide the best service to the Environment Agency's public.

The Environment Agency provides high quality environmental protection and improvement, working with a number of other organisations to prevent damage to the environment by providing education and guidance. Hence, in order to offer the best service and practical advice to its public, it is vital that employees of the Environment Agency always have the latest information at their fingertips. Autonomy's technology supplies 12,000 employees at the Environment Agency with access to the most recent information by collating around 50,000 documents from internal sources. The technology operates both in Welsh and English.

Autonomy's Directed Navigation enables users to refine their queries by automatically listing available options in a user-friendly drop-down menu. An employee looking for information on flood defence for example can refine his or her search by region, selecting the matching projects of interest in this area from a preconceived list. As new records become available, Autonomy's technology automatically indexes these documents and makes them available in the Directed Navigation menu. In addition to employing Directed Navigation to locate information, users can also choose to type their request for information directly into the query box, either through a natural language description or by keyword. As Autonomy understands the conceptual meaning of information, the technology is able to understand a natural language query in its context, producing the most relevant results.

Janie Perrins, Intranet Manger for the Environment Agency, said: "We chose Autonomy to power access to information on the Environment Agency's Intranet, Easinet, as a tactical solution. It met our business requirements and had the added bonus of being a technology that could do more than simple keyword retrieval. Autonomy allows Environment Agency employees to refine their research, allowing them to find the exact piece of information they are looking for in a fast and easy process. This allows staff to save time and effort in their research, leaving them more room to focus on other projects."

Charlotte Herbert, Global Marketing Manager Autonomy, commented, "Autonomy is working successfully with numerous UK government agencies and other public sector organisations around the world to support the most effective use of knowledge and help improve efficiency through its intelligent IDOL technology. We're pleased to welcome the Environment Agency to this community, which in the UK includes among others the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the Parliamentary Information Service (PIMS), the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and several Police Forces."
