AUTONOMY UPGRADES IDOL MOBILE, BRINGING PERSONALIZED RETRIEVAL AND INFORMATION DELIVERY TO MILLIONS OF HANDSETS WORLDWIDE
Enhanced functionality set brings the power of IDOL technology to mobile users for advanced personal search and customized information delivery
Cambridge, England and San Francisco, CA August 15, 2005 - Autonomy Corporation plc (LSE: AU. or AU.L), a global leader in information infrastructure software for the enterprise, today brought a new level of innovation to mobile search, launching an upgrade to its existing mobile search technology, IDOL Mobile. IDOL Mobile brings the power of Autonomy's enterprise technology to wireless devises, providing the core technology that allows some of the world's most innovative mobile telecommunication carriers to deliver targeted multimedia content ranging from videos and ring tones to e-commerce product suggestions to consumers on the move. The technology further supports an increasingly mobile workforce, by allowing corporate users to search and access corporate information from their handheld devices.
IDOL Mobile, which is already used by some of the largest mobile telecommunications providers in the world, including Hutchison 3G, the world's largest 3G network, who have rolled out IDOL Mobile to users across Europe, enables telecommunications providers to continuously reach out to subscribers with highly relevant, tailor made multimedia content including video files, ring tones, games, news, e-commerce suggestions and web pages specifically repurposed for mobile screens. The enterprise equally benefits from IDOL Mobile, by offering its workforce a fast gateway to internal and external information from their mobile handsets. The technology keeps employees abreast of the latest news and developments even if they are away from the office or do not have access to a computer. IDOL Mobile's advanced ability to understand the interests of individual users and to automatically deliver tailored content directly to their mobile phones makes the technology a powerful tool for organizations in any sector. This latest upgrade to IDOL Mobile extends the functionality already available to tens of thousands of subscribers, enhancing the retrieval and information delivery functions so that mobile users can now access over 300 file formats from their wireless device.
In addition, today's upgrade offers network providers a new way to engage with their customers by providing the technology that enables providers to profile the way users interact with information on the handset in order to deliver targeted shopping and advertising suggestions to individual handsets. As demand for high quality, technologically sophisticated handsets with increased storage capacity has risen and availability of GPRS services has increased, IDOL Mobile assists mobile telecommunications providers in their goal of differentiating their services and providing consumers with the very latest products in order to generate new revenue streams and maintain customer loyalty. IDOL Mobile takes mobile technology into a new era, making Autonomy's enterprise class personalized search available to millions of consumers at the click of a button.
"Mobile search is a hard problem to solve," said Sue Feldman, IDC's VP for Content Technologies. "With small screens and limited interactivity, mobile users don't want extraneous information delivered to them. There is no doubt that targeted messages and personalized search will drive new revenue for mobile etailers. This trend cuts both ways, providing more pertinent information to users who are trying to avoid spam, and giving etailers pinpoint marketing that will increase the click-through rate to drive new sales."
The launch of IDOL Mobile continues Autonomy's long heritage of providing highly innovative software for mobile telecommunications carriers and takes Autonomy's mobile technology into the next generation. With a strong profile in the mobile telecommunications market and a customer list including some of the largest operators in the world, such as Nokia, Vodafone, Hutchison 3G, Sprint, Ericsson, Telecom Italia and Tiscali Autonomy's IDOL technology has achieved significant market penetration as numerous top telecommunications providers have made Autonomy an integral part of their strategy. The latest release of IDOL Mobile provides the core technological capacity that will help mobile telecommunications carriers drive revenues and increase profitability by augmenting their existing portfolio of innovative services to customers.
"Following a number of successful implementations of IDOL Mobile throughout Europe, today's update reaffirms Autonomy's position in mobile data retrieval and delivery," said Dr Mike Lynch, CEO, Autonomy. "The sheer volume of information we each interact with on a daily basis has increased dramatically over the last few years; IDOL Mobile offers a proactive solution, delivering highly personalized content, even multimedia files such as video and audio content, straight to end users wherever they are. By understanding end users' information needs, personalizing, customizing, summarizing and delivering content to users on the fly, IDOL Mobile provides the connection between end users and mobile telecommunications providers. Today's update demonstrates Autonomy's continuing commitment to innovation as we launch an enhanced service developed specifically in response to new challenges and opportunities which have developed in the mobile telecommunications market since Autonomy became the first company to offer mobile retrieval capabilities some years ago."
