Siemens Power Generation Group Selects Verity Technology for its Intranet and Extranet Web Sites
Verity K2 Enterprise Software to Handle Search and Classification of More than 10 Million Documents across Multiple Content Repositories
SUNNYVALE, Calif. - 2005-06-13 - Verity Inc. (NASDAQ: VRTY), a leading provider of enterprise software that enables organizations to maximize the return on their intellectual capital investment, today announced that Siemens Power Generation Group (PG), a division of Siemens AG (NYSE: SI) and one of the world's largest producers of systems for the utility and processing industries, has implemented Verity® K2 Enterprise (K2E) advanced search, classification and recommendation software to manage content on its intranet and extranet Web sites.
With the increasing amount of structured and unstructured content that resides in multiple content repositories across PG, including SAP applications, databases, and complex engineering documentation, the company recognized the challenge of finding information. "It is critical to the success of PG that we can access information at the point of need," said Paul Stewart, manager of Business Process Engineering for Siemens Power Generation.
After identifying potential suppliers of search and classification solutions in the market, the IT team under Stewart's direction at Siemens Power Generation set up a proof of concept in March 2004 within the PG information environment, dealing with data from Lotus Notes, Oracle Database and multiple large file systems. Using a single index server, the requirement was to connect with the content, index it and provide a user interface that would facilitate the search process using parametric selection.
"PG selected Verity because it performed the tasks quickly and effectively," Stewart said. "The Verity K2E solution was rolled out in October 2004 to approximately 2,000 initial users. Response has been positive."
PG's extensive global operation consists of seven divisions with a workforce of more than 30,000 employees. Currently, three divisions, including Plant Services, Gas Turbines and Steam Turbines, are benefiting from the Verity K2E implementation. The others are expected to follow later this year. In addition, PG has 450 different document types in its various content repositories, which contain more than 10 million documents. During the initial implementation phase, Verity K2E indexed 35 critical document types in 47 databases holding one million documents. Verity K2E, which can handle full-text search as well as selection of which repository to search, will be rolled out to handle the search and classification of more than 10 million documents.
One of the many appeals of the Verity K2E system is its ability to permit search within all of the divisions' databases as well as by-division search. The Verity document-level, indexed security feature is another attraction to PG; only authorized users are able to access and view a given document.
"Siemens Power Generation is the archetypical large, global enterprise with a great need for effective management of structured and unstructured content. Its advanced search and classification requirements could only be met by a true enterprise-wide intelligent content services platform," said Anthony J. Bettencourt, Verity's president and chief executive officer. "We are pleased to see that Verity K2E is meeting PG's growing business needs and requirements."
