Capgemini IT contract will help Scotland's drive to revitalise commercial research & development

Capgemini UK plc has won the contract to design and build a comprehensive technical infrastructure to support the Knowledge Management requirements for Scotland's new Intermediary Technology Institutes (ITIs) in Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee. The contract follows an initial three-month study of requirements by Capgemini consultants and the acceptance by the Institutes of their detailed recommendations.

When completed in early summer 2005, the new infrastructure will permit easy but secure sharing of knowledge and expertise between the Institutes and their members in Scotland, the rest of the UK and worldwide, including existing companies in high-tech industries, startup businesses, public and private sector organisations, universities and research institutes.

It will also save time and costs by providing a collaborative working environment that enables people in different locations to work on the same project without duplication of effort or communications problems.

In order to provide a cost-effective and reliable solution rapidly, the Capgemini plan centres on the integration of proven market-leading commercial software components from vendors including Microsoft, Meridio and Convera.

Tim Wright, Head of Knowledge Management, ITI Scotland said: 'The ITI's have a crucial role in making Scotland a world leader in major global growth sectors such as energy, life sciences, digital media, telecommunications and new technologies, and in fostering research, creating high-quality jobs, and helping our high-growth, high-value technology companies thrive. To fulfill that role the Institutes need highly efficient IT and knowledge-sharing capabilities, and that is why we have entrusted this vital new contract to Capgemini.'
