BIBLIOTHÈQUE MUNICIPALE DE LYON CHOOSES AUTONOMY TO GUIDE USERS TO THE RIGHT INFORMATION

Cambridge, England - 16 February 2005 - Autonomy Corporation plc (LSE: AU.) a global leader in infrastructure software for the enterprise, today announced that the Bibliothèque Municipale de Lyon, the second largest library in France, has chosen Autonomy to power its online catalogue system. Autonomy guides users effortlessly to books and other media stored in the library's archives, proactively offering suggestions to related materials and intelligently narrowing down results. The system, which provides users with library records from the Bibliothèque Municipale de Lyon, can be accessed from anywhere in the world through the library's public website, www.bm-lyon.fr.

Finding the right piece of information in the archives of any public library can be a frustrating and time-consuming process - especially so in a library as large as the Bibliothèque Municipale de Lyon which stores over two million documents, books and multi-media content. Even though most libraries employ a host of highly qualified librarians to assist users, such a great amount of information is simply not manageable in human terms. Autonomy's IDOL technology leads researchers automatically to the information they are looking for and allows them to share knowledge with other readers through an electronic knowledge forum. The facility to find information and solve general research enquiries automatically enables librarians to devote more time to answering individual and specialist requests, making the library as user-friendly as possible.

Through Autonomy's unrivalled ability to understand the content of documents and set them in context to each other, the technology automatically sorts all available data and presents the right information to the right recipient. Autonomy guides users to gradually refine their queries, generating the most accurate results and listing them by their relevancy. A user looking for information on 'Napoléon', for example, is presented with options to refine his or her query by clicking on suggested terms such as 'Napoléon emperor', 'Napoléon Bonaparte' or 'Napoléon chef'. These suggested terms narrow down results to the relevant field an individual is working on, saving significant time on research. The content of each result is presented as a summary, enabling users to locate the most important information even faster and alerting them to documents that might otherwise have been overlooked. Via a knowledge forum, the 'Guichet du Savoir', readers can further share knowledge on a chosen subject and pose related questions to librarians. Members can locate messages by date and subject and subscribe to Autonomy's automatic alerting system, which informs them instantly as soon as a new message relating to their interest has been posted or a new subject has been introduced.

Patrick Bazin, General Director at the Bibliothèque Municipale de Lyon, said, "The Bibliothèque Municipale de Lyon is the second largest library in France, visited by more than 2.5 million users a year, and we are proud to present such a wealth of information to our readers. Autonomy has fundamentally changed the way our visitors and employees are able to locate and interact with information, creating a highly user-friendly system that offers readers the most sophisticated, technologically advanced research experience."

Charlotte Herbert, Global Marketing Manager Autonomy, commented, "We are delighted to announce our project with the Bibliothèque Municipale de Lyon. Autonomy already supports the information systems of numerous libraries throughout the world, guiding users to the most relevant content with precision and ease. Our deployment at the Bibliothèque Municipale de Lyon demonstrates once again how Autonomy can make libraries more user-friendly and facilitate public access to information."

Autonomy's unique Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL) integrates unstructured, semi-structured and structured information from multiple repositories through an understanding of their content. Autonomy grants enterprises the flexibility to use advanced information retrieval or legacy-based approaches. At the heart of Autonomy's software is its ability to process text, voice and video and identify and rank the main concepts within them. It then automatically categorizes, links, summarizes, personalizes and delivers that information. Autonomy's technology also drives collaboration across the enterprise and enables organizations to effectively leverage expertise. Autonomy's infrastructure technology is used to automate operations within enterprise information portals, customer relationship management, knowledge management, business intelligence and e-business applications, among others.
