DEPARTMENT FOR EDUCATION AND SKILLS SELECTS AUTONOMY
Cambridge, England - February 7, 2005 - Autonomy Corporation plc (LSE: AU.) a global leader in infrastructure software for the enterprise, today announced that the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) has selected Autonomy to support a website and knowledge portal for its Building Schools for the Future (BSF) program. BSF is the single biggest school buildings investment venture and aims to rebuild or renew nearly every secondary school in England over a 10-15 year period, beginning in 2005-06.
Schools represent the hopes and aspirations of every community. However, too often they are hampered by buildings that provide a real barrier to effective teaching. The aim of the BSF program is therefore to provide local education authorities (LEAs) and schools with significant funds to spend on improving their secondary school buildings. Autonomy powers a comprehensive knowledge portal for up to 2000 named users and a public website for Building Schools for the Future, supporting the management and dissemination of information. The information resources managed by Autonomy support decision-makers and stakeholders, enabling them to exchange knowledge, recognize opportunities and pre-empt potential issues for future building planning. The website, www.bsf.gov.uk, also provides a wealth of general information, allowing the public to keep abreast of local and national developments surrounding the project.
Autonomy's software automatically creates individual profiles based on a user's interests and delivers relevant documents directly to their PC in real-time. Users are alerted to critical content instantly as it becomes available and all aggregated information is clustered automatically, making it easy to locate and digest. As Autonomy intuitively understands the content and context of all indexed documents, the software further enables users who are looking for information on a specific subject to find and retrieve this data swiftly and accurately.
Schools Minister Stephen Twigg said, "The BSF programme is the biggest single government investment in improving school buildings for over 50 years. We are striving to create world-class, 21st-century schools - environments which will inspire learning for decades to come and provide exceptional assets for the whole community."
Charlotte Herbert, Global Marketing Manager Autonomy, commented, "Building Schools for the Future is an exciting and inspirational project of which we are proud to be a part. As proven by its successful deployment in countless projects throughout the public sector, Autonomy's software will allow the DfES to leverage the maximum value from their information assets, increasing efficiency and delivering instant ROI."
Autonomy's unique Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL) integrates unstructured, semi-structured and structured information from multiple repositories through an understanding of their content. Autonomy grants enterprises the flexibility to use advanced information retrieval or legacy-based approaches. At the heart of Autonomy's software is its ability to process text, voice and video and identify and rank the main concepts within them. It then automatically categorizes, links, summarizes, personalizes and delivers that information. Autonomy's technology also drives collaboration across the enterprise and enables organizations to effectively leverage expertise. Autonomy's infrastructure technology is used to automate operations within enterprise information portals, customer relationship management, knowledge management, business intelligence and e-business applications, among others.
