Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer Fortifies Legal Strategy with Verity Technology

Worlds' Leading Law Firm Uses Search, Taxonomy and Classification Software Globally to Better Equip its 2,400 Lawyers with Critical Information

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - 2004-10-16 - Verity Inc. (NASDAQ: VRTY), a leading provider of enterprise software that enables organizations to maximize the return on their intellectual capital investment, today announced that Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer (Freshfields), a leading international law firm, has selected a suite of Verity's products to manage information across the company. These Verity products will form the basis of a know how system designed to help the firm's lawyers and clients based in different countries to locate business critical information more quickly and efficiently by providing an intuitive browser-based knowledge interface.

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer will be leveraging the advanced search, classification and recommendation capabilities of Verity® K2 Enterprise (K2E) together with Verity® Collaborative Classifier (VCC), taxonomy and classification management software that enables distributed subject matter experts to organize information around specific business roles and requirements. The firm plans to roll out both products in early 2005. They will replace a combination of home- grown search and other search and classification systems. Verity® Response, which handles frequently asked questions to speed up the process of finding information, has also been included as part of the Verity package. The company's software is intended to be used initially for internal business processes to support both local jurisdictional work as well as cross-border cooperation, and will eventually be extended to a combination of other applications.

The firm has over 2,400 lawyers in 28 key locations across the world, covering Europe, Asia and the United States. Like most law firms, documents at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer have historically been electronically indexed but stored in paper form in files at each location. The firm is now embarking on a program of storing these documents in full text electronically. Once converted, Verity's K2E will provide powerful search capability, allowing lawyers across the world to search documents throughout the firm in different languages, subject to confidentiality restrictions. In addition, VCC will enable KM legal professionals, who know and use the content, to manage the way the firm's information is organized, even though they may be distributed across different parts of the network or geographic locations. VCC permits the maintenance of the taxonomies based on individuals' roles within the enterprise.

The international law firm looked at a number of Intellectual Capital Management systems and selected Verity because it met the majority of its business requirements. The Verity technologies also offered a solid development platform, ease of integration, scalability, thesaurus management, integrated taxonomy tools, good technical support and a strategic platform for the firm. "We have been working with knowledge management for over 20 years as an organization, so we know what we need," says Julia Randall-Khan, director of knowledge management at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. "We started with two key requirements - the technology had to have very good taxonomy-building capabilities and it had to be user-friendly because we are using the technology as a tool to enable us to introduce some more efficient working practices and new ways of sharing our know how across the firm. Verity came out a clear leader against these requirements."

Verity will also help to draw together different technologies. "We needed a technology that can bring together our content store platform, our workflow applications and the presentation layer. Verity's products can be integrated into these technologies seamlessly," continued Randall-Khan.

"Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has a very specific and informed approach to knowledge management and search was just a small part of its overall criteria," says Simon Atkinson, UK managing director of Verity. "We look forward to working with Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer to expand the use of Verity as a key business application and partnering with them to continue enhancing the legal firm's knowledge management program."
