XWAVE AND AUTONOMY OFFER SECURITY PORTAL SOLUTION FOR CANADIAN GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS AND AGENCIES

Portal provides single point of access to unclassified information and enables cost-sharing of system- and data-acquisition

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - October 13, 2004 - Autonomy Corporation plc (Nasdaq: AUTN; LSE: AU.), a leading provider of infrastructure software for the enterprise, today announced that xwave, an Aliant Company (TSX: AIT), and one of Canada's largest business-solutions providers, has incorporated Autonomy's technology into its Open Source Information Centre (OSIC) solution to be marketed to Canadian government departments and agencies.

A wealth of valuable information for the defense and public safety analyst community resides on the Internet but with millions of pages posted online daily, sifting through the sheer volume of data is a daunting and time-consuming task. Community users need to be able to find relevant and current news and information quickly and easily.

The OSIC solution is aimed at addressing this need through its advanced summarization, data mining and concept visualization capabilities. As a powerful web portal, OSIC enables search and data-mining on both the visible and the invisible web (the invisible web is the portion of the web that traditional search engines do not index for technical or other reasons). In addition to providing a "one-stop-shopping" portal to the community's users, OSIC saves money by pooling the costs of system operation and data acquisition.

"Government agencies need access to the most current, relevant information at all times in order to more effectively fulfill their responsibilities and serve constituents," said Don McClure, General Manager, Business Development, Ottawa Region, xwave. "The time expenditure and search inaccuracy associated with conventional Internet search techniques culminate in wasted resources and often, incomplete information. By incorporating Autonomy's technology, we can provide instant, targeted retrieval of unstructured information, which allows users to focus on their core responsibilities knowing they have easy access to all the information they need."

The foundation of the OSIC is Autonomy's unique Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL) software. At a high level, IDOL integrates unstructured, semi-structured and structured information from multiple repositories through an understanding of their content. Simply put, the software processes text, voice and video, and identifies and ranks the main concepts within them. Then it automatically categorizes links, summarizes, personalizes and delivers the data. Autonomy's infrastructure technology is used to automate operations within applications such as enterprise-information portals that support - among others - customer relationship management, knowledge management, business intelligence, and e-business applications.

"The flow of information to organizations triples approximately every three months, with about 90 percent being unstructured data," said Stouffer Egan, CEO, North America, Autonomy. "Our IDOL software offers a truly advanced, conceptual understanding of data that, integrated in xwave's OSIC solution, opens a new world of data mining and sharing for users previously limited by search engines. Through this partnership, clients gain the benefits of both Autonomy's strength in infrastructure software, and xwave's expertise in portal development - in particular, for defense organizations in the public sector."

OSIC leverages the intelligent processing of information to create a web-based, community-shared and commercially-operated service. OSIC will efficiently identify and deliver relevant information to meet specific user needs. Users can make one-time-only queries or set up persistent queries to continuously monitor for information of interest. OSIC also allows queries to be sent simultaneously to multiple Internet search engines, with results subsequently merged into a single prioritized list.

A prototype OSIC portal was piloted in 2003 with nine government agencies. Drawing from their positive feedback, xwave enhanced the service and unveiled a fully operational solution in late September 2004.
