Oxford Dictionary of National Biography goes online with Verity
SUNNYVALE, Calif - 2004-10-12 - Verity Inc. (NASDAQ: VRTY), a leading provider of enterprise software that enables organizations to maximize the return on their intellectual capital investment, today announced that Oxford University Press has selected Verity® K2 Enterprise (K2E) advanced search, classification and personalization software to provide functionality for the online version of its new Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (Oxford DNB) http://www.oup.com/oxforddnb, launched on September 23, 2004.
The Oxford DNB online provides fast and accurate access to over 50,000 biographies that record the lives of the men and women who shaped all aspects of British history and culture worldwide, from the Greek explorer Pytheas, author of the first known account of Britain in the fourth century BC, to the founding fathers of the United States and up to more modern figures such as Diana, princess of Wales. As part of a continuing drive to make its resources more widely available, the Oxford University Press has gone live with its project to bring the Oxford DNB to the Internet.
The Oxford DNB will use Verity K2E initially as a search and classification tool, but also selected it as the foundation for future expansion of the publication's Web site. Robert Faber, project director for Oxford DNB explains, "We didn't want to close any doors on future plans and needed a system to handle expansion in the future. It needed to be scaleable and have the text, reference and image search functionality to handle over 100,000 documents, a large number of simultaneous users and requests, and provide a high level of XML tag awareness and support."
Content on the new Oxford DNB Web site will be updated at least three times a year. At the outset it will contain the same information as the paper-based version. Replacing and extending the venerable Victorian DNB, the Oxford DNB is a key reference point for many English-speaking institutions around the world, including college schools, public libraries and museums. Verity will be used to search across the online version with simple, quick name or date searches, but also more complex searches such as which female engineers were born between 1833 and 1900. It will also be able to distinguish between surnames, towns and institutions such as the name Windsor, the town of Windsor and Windsor Castle.
Approximately 12 search vendors were evaluated by an independent Web site developer designated by Oxford University Press and Verity emerged as the solution that exceeded all the requirements of the Oxford DNB. "Having used Verity for the online version of the Oxford English Dictionary in 2000, we knew it had the track record. When we evaluated it again for this project it ticked all the boxes with ease," explains Faber.
"Verity has worked with Oxford University Press for the last four years and we are excited by the opportunity to extend that relationship through the Oxford DNB," says Simon Atkinson, UK managing director of Verity GB Ltd. "Accurate search through over 2000 years of English history is not a small task and we're pleased that Oxford University Press has once again selected Verity to help its users locate relevant and accurate information."
About the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography
The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography is a collection of 54922 biographies of men and women who have influenced life in the British Isles from the earliest times to the end of 2000. With its sixty volumes and 60 million words, it is one of largest research projects ever published.
An A-Z of people who have left a significant mark in the British life, the Oxford DNB covers men and women from the British Isles, those born in other countries when they were connected with British rule or cultural life, and some visitors to Britain who left important records of life here.
The range of lives covered in the Oxford DNB is unparalleled. The sixty volumes cover 2400 years of British history, beginning with the Greek explorer Pytheas (fl. 4th century BC), author of the first known account of Britain, and ending with Sir Isaac Hai (Jack) Jacob, a leading barrister, who emigrated from China to Britain in the 1930s and died on 26 December 2000.
