Latest Release of Verity Ultraseek Software Offers New and Improved Capabilities To Enhance Enterprise Search Relevance, Content Acquisition

Company Introduces Release-Over-Release Improvements in Indexing, Security and Platform Support

SUNNYVALE, Calif - 2004-09-07 - Verity Inc. (NASDAQ: VRTY), a leading provider of enterprise software that enables organizations to maximize the return on their intellectual capital investment, today announced the availability of Verity® Ultraseek® release 5.3, downloadable enterprise search software well-suited for organizations that need a powerful, yet quick-to-implement search engine to enable employees, partners and customers to quickly and accurately locate intellectual capital on public Web sites and intranets.

This latest release of Verity Ultraseek incorporates a number of significant features that further enhance the product's search relevance and content acquisition capabilities, including:

• Page Expert to recognize patterns in HTML pages, so that the spider indexes only the relevant content, and skips over navigation, menus, advertisements and common template-generated text;

• Relevance Tuning and Editorial Control Options to fine-tune search results to match information structure of the documents and end-user needs;

• Multi-Spider to allow the spidering technology to make multiple simultaneous HTTP requests to a single host, enabling users to get access to new and updated content quickly;

• Weblog Update to ensure that new entries are searchable by accepting notification whenever new content is published to selected blogs;

• Enhanced Secure Search to ensure only those documents that a user is authorized to view will appear in the results lists;

• Expanded Platform Support to include Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 and SUSE Linux 8.0.

"The objective with every new release of Verity Ultraseek is to continue to drive the state-of-the-art in end-users' search experience, while maintaining low total cost of ownership. Verity Ultraseek 5.3 brings improvements in search relevance for real-world enterprise content, where simple web search algorithms fail," said Anthony J. Bettencourt, Verity's president and chief executive officer. "This new offering focuses on extending Ultraseek's superior performance to deliver relevant search results and an easy implementation process that can be achieved within minutes."

Superior Search Relevance

The new Page Expert feature increases search relevance by recognizing patterns in HTML pages through the use of filters, so that the spider indexes only the relevant content, and skips over navigation, menus, advertisements and common template-generated text. The Page Expert's filters can be automatic, or customized to match individual enterprise's local page conventions and templates. This feature also includes an intuitive interface to allow administrators to view a visual representation of the filters' performance on a particular page. Page Expert is particularly valuable in Web environment in which author-written indexing directions are missing or inconsistent.

Furthermore, the product's search results can be fine-tuned to leverage information structure with relevance tuning options that deliver comprehensive control over the relative weight of metadata such as date, author and URL, when scoring documents.

Enterprise information is typically found in hundreds of different file formats and languages, and in multiple locations. With the explosion of content on corporate intranets and government websites, it is not unusual to find single systems with hundreds of thousands of documents. While past versions of Ultraseek were tuned to gradually build an index by accessing many sites, the software's new Multi-Spider capability can rapidly create large indices by allowing multiple simultaneous HTTP requests to be sent to a single host server. This enables users to access new and updated content quickly and easily.

The popularity of weblogs and "blogging", both on public sites and now within the enterprise, has resulted in growing interest in being able to search these dynamic resources. Ultraseek's new Weblog Update feature notifies the Ultraseek system when new blog entries are published, ensuring that users get access to the latest entries published in specified blogs in real-time.

With this new release's secure search capabilities, hit-level filtering of results lists is supported for both basic and NT Challenge/Response authentication. This ensures that only those documents that a user is authorized to view will appear in results lists. If a user isn't authorized to view a document, he won't even know it exists.

Expanded Platform Support

The increasing acceptance of Linux in the enterprise datacenter has resulted in greater interest in support for additional platforms. Ultraseek 5.3 now supports Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 2.1 and 3.0, Red Hat Linux 8.0, as well as SUSE Linux 8.0. Supported non-Linux platforms include Solaris and Microsoft Windows 2003.
