Virage and Apptek to Jointly Offer State-Of-The-Art, Multilingual Voice-Recognition Solutions

Combined Technologies Address Companies' Need for Information Retrieval in Different Formats and Various Languages

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - August 23, 2004 - Virage, a division of Autonomy Corp. (NASDAQ: AUTN; LSE: AU.) and a leading provider of rich media communication and content management software, and Applications Technology, Inc. (AppTek), a leading technology developer of state-of-the-art applications in computational linguistics and linguistic software ("Lingware"), today announced a joint, global effort to provide leading-edge, multilingual voice-recognition software to government entities and broadcast media outlets globally. With this agreement, AppTek will now be able to integrate its text-based applications with Virage's speech technology, such as voice recognition and text-to-speech transcription and translation.

There is a growing need in the market for information retrieval in different formats and in a variety of languages. AppTek, a natural language processing company, excels in machine translation and information retrieval software with capabilities such as query translation, proper noun detection and text summarization, all in a variety of languages. But as its systems are primarily text-based, AppTek sought a solution that would address speech-based information retrieval as well. Virage and AppTek's combined technologies effectively address this need with tools that recognize, transcribe and search voice content. AppTek enhances its solutions with Virage's voice-recognition software solution, a technology that enables the exploitation and acquisition of foreign-language content.

Virage and AppTek are currently working together on a number of compelling and timely deployments, including the Iraqi Media Network (IMN). In this federally funded project, the IMN plans to use Virage systems, including VS News Monitoring, at Iraqi media outlets to monitor Iraqi news broadcasts in real time. Tracking these news outlets with Virage and AppTekÕs combined technologies will help flag trends in the news, and enable faster transcription and publication of the news on portals for public access.

"We evaluated a number of other vendors, but concluded that Virage's speech technology is truly top of the line in a number of ways," said Mudar Yaghi, CEO of AppTek. "Virage's API is flexible and its graphical user interface is well-developed and comprehensive. Beyond these qualities, AppTek wanted to work with a company that has a proven track record and stellar reputation with government agencies. Virage met this requirement, and continues to prove its worth in not only the government sector, but various other markets."

"Ongoing global issues have brought to light the need to track and exploit information in a number of languages and formats," said Stouffer Egan, CEO of North American Operations, Autonomy. "The combination of Virage's powerful voice recognition technology and AppTek's profoundly precise line of machine translation will positively impact companies' performance in the acquisition of vital information, regardless of the language or format."
