UK's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Selects Autonomy
Cambridge, England - August 16th 2004 - Autonomy Corporation plc (Nasdaq: AUTN; LSE: AU.) a global leader in infrastructure software for the enterprise, today announced that the U.K.'s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has selected Autonomy to play a key role in the organization's Electronic Communications Programme. Autonomy will be used on the Department's internet and intranet sites to maximize efficiency and improve access to departmental information.
At the heart of Defra's pledge to achieve sustainable development and preserve the essentials of life - water, food, air, land, people, animals and plants, is careful use of valuable resources. Autonomy forms an integral part of that vision by streamlining access to critical information and providing users across the organization with improved access to information that will assist them in their work towards safeguarding a greener, more sustainable environment for the future. By aggregating information from numerous locations and forming a conceptual understanding of that content, Autonomy encourages organizations to make the most of their existing resources and access vital information within the knowledge base.
Clive Holdsworth of Defra's Communications Directorate said, "Our Electronic Communications Programme exemplifies Defra's attitude to efficiency and improved customer focus. The powerful functionality offered by Autonomy will play a key role in increasing access to relevant information both for members of the department and a wide range of our customers."
"Like many government departments, Defra have realized the value of investing in information and providing citizens and staff with innovative technology that encourages users to have a proactive relationship with information." said Dominic Johnson, Group Marketing Director, Autonomy. "Unlike more traditional, legacy based technologies, Autonomy challenges the way we interact with information by bringing relevant information straight to users at the desktop."
Autonomy's unique Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL) integrates unstructured, semi-structured and structured information from multiple repositories through an understanding of their content. Autonomy grants enterprises the flexibility to use advanced information retrieval or legacy-based approaches. At the heart of Autonomy's software is its ability to process text, voice and video and identify and rank the main concepts within them. It then automatically categorizes, links, summarizes, personalizes and delivers that information. Autonomy's technology also drives collaboration across the enterprise and enables organizations to effectively leverage expertise. Autonomy's infrastructure technology is used to automate operations within enterprise information portals, customer relationship management, knowledge management, business intelligence and e-business applications, among others.
