Jane's Information Group Selects Verity K2 Catalog for its Internet Site

Leading Provider of Defense, Security Intelligence Says Verity's Advanced Search and Classification Software Will Provide Customers with Better Search Capabilities Through its Subscription Services

SUNNYVALE, Calif - 2004-07-19 - Verity Inc. (NASDAQ: VRTY), a leading provider of enterprise software that enables organizations to maximize the return on their intellectual capital investment, today announced that Jane's Information Group, a globally-renowned provider of information and analysis on national and international defense, security and risk developments, has selected Verity® K2 Catalog (K2C) advanced search and classification software for its Internet site, janes.com.

Founded in 1898, Jane's is at the forefront of publishing and developing information solutions for its customers, which include the intelligence agencies and defense and security departments of many nations' governments as well as producers of material, products, systems and services used by those public sector organizations.

As can be expected in a world filled with political stress and strain, armed conflict and frequent acts of terrorism, Jane's information services are in high demand. "A vast mix of people come to our site every day, from government officials, business managers, engineers, and researchers to librarians and historians," said Rahul Belani, Jane's chief technology officer. "They all come to our site to get highly accurate information to allow them to do their jobs and make critical decisions." Recent site statistics show seven million page views are made each month.

The impetus for Jane's to deploy Verity's advanced search and classification software was a subscription-based online service the group developed, providing access on an authenticated basis to premium content. According to Belani, the factor in selecting Verity K2 Catalog was performance. "Jane's has been a Verity customer for many years. We recognized Verity's ability to perform and deliver as a company, as well as its experience in delivering quality search and classification technology to blue chip companies," Belani said. In addition, Verity K2C's modular capabilities mapped well to the site's various access levels. The content available on an open basis takes advantage of Verity K2C's basic search and navigation functions, while the access-controlled content leverages the software's more advanced search capabilities.

Jane's also plans to leverage Verity K2C's classification capabilities across the site to create taxonomies that will make the process of finding information a faster, better experience for the end-users. The group will utilize the Verity software to locate information from its 77 different micro- news feed sites that are connected to Jane's main Web site.

"The need for a high quality search capability is important for Jane's, an organization that focuses on intellectual capital generation and distribution," said Anthony J. Bettencourt, Verity's president and chief executive officer. "We believe that Verity K2 Catalog's ability to organize information and permit the rapid, secure retrieval of highly relevant search results will play an important part in Jane's growing subscriber-based service and in maintaining its century-long reputation for accuracy."

Verity K2C's advanced search and classification capabilities will come into play with a new offering in the premium content area of the Jane's site. Later this year sections to be labeled "Intelligence Centres" will be introduced that will deal with specific subject areas. In addition to a set of relevant search results, Verity K2C will also provide subscribers with a list of recommended documents based on the user's search query. Jane's believes that Verity K2C will continue to play an important role in the expansion of its Web site, providing greater appeal and value to its subscribers.
