Verity Introduces Collaborative Classifier for Taxonomy Management

First Role-based, Distributed Classification Software Creates and Maintains Taxonomies and Related Applications

SUNNYVALE, Calif - 2004-06-21 - Verity Inc., (NASDAQ: VRTY), a leading provider of enterprise software that enables organizations to maximize the return on their intellectual capital investment, today announced the availability of Verity® Collaborative Classifier 1.0, the first taxonomy and classification management software that enables distributed subject matter experts to collaborate with corporate librarians and knowledge engineers in real-time to organize information around specific business roles and requirements. Verity Collaborative Classifier provides global enterprises with comprehensive, flexible taxonomy development, taxonomy rollout and taxonomy maintenance capabilities.

Verity Collaborative Classifier's unique capabilities include:

• Workflow-based collaboration to allow taxonomy and classification management to be distributed to assigned subject matter experts who know the content, as well as to knowledge engineers who know and understand taxonomy development; and

• Automatic classification and publishing capabilities that leverage domain expertise to keep taxonomies up-to-date in real-time.

"Verity Collaborative Classifier allows our customers to manage growing volumes of intellectual capital more efficiently than ever before," said Anthony J. Bettencourt, Verity's president and chief executive officer. "It allows enterprise users to collaborate for effective and accurate management of taxonomies and classification of documents. This collaboration is essential to organizing information in ways that foster better business processes, improve customer interactions and enhance operational efficiency."

User Roles and Workflow

Verity Collaborative Classifier's workflow capabilities enable users in different roles to collaborate in real-time even though they may be distributed across different parts of the organization or geographic locations.

The software permits the maintenance of the taxonomies to be distributed to authorize end-users, subject matter experts and knowledge engineers, based on individuals' roles within the enterprise. Roles can be distributed to as granular a level as required by individual organization. For example, a corporate librarian could be able to modify an entire taxonomy, while an editor has access to a top-level category, and a subject matter expert is responsible for only one subcategory. The results: Maximum leverage of enterprise expertise based on Verity's industry-leading automatic classification.

Once an editor proposes a modification to the taxonomy, the resultant changes are automatically routed to the appropriate knowledge engineer, or publisher, for review. With approval, the changes are then forwarded for automatic publishing, either in real-time or on a set schedule. The workflow also allows multiple users to work simultaneously on a shared taxonomy, with the locking mechanism to ensure error-free collaboration.

"We believe that Verity's Collaborative Classifier will enable our experts in a wide range of legal practices to leverage the firm's intellectual capital quickly and effectively," said Simon Niven, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer's program manager. "Using Verity Collaborative Classifier, we can distribute responsibilities for classification to subject experts and knowledge professionals located in our international offices. This way they can work together to build browsable taxonomies in both real time and in the most useful and productive way. The tight integration between Verity's Collaborative Classifier and the taxonomies also shortens our development time. Another advantage is that we can now incorporate a workflow tool with security features into our knowledge management system."

Real-time Taxonomy Updates

Verity Collaborative Classifier automatically assigns, or publishes, documents to categories once taxonomies have been set up. It is during this phase that the software scores each document, leveraging Verity's automatic classification with business rules for each category. A document is then accepted into the category, routed to a publisher for approval, or rejected based on the configurable threshold determined for that category.

The browser-based client of Verity Collaborative Classifier allows users to manage taxonomies and classification directly through their Web browsers. The easy-to-follow interface lets them use all of the software's advanced features without requiring significant training or expertise.

"Finding the right information has traditionally been a challenge within the enterprise," noted Jonathan B. Spira, chief executive officer and chief analyst at Basex, a research firm that covers collaboration and knowledge sharing issues. "Solutions such as the Verity Collaborative Classifier make it possible to create and update a taxonomy which more closely reflects a company's intellectual and human capital resources. That, in turn, lowers costs by increasing response time to client or customer demands and reducing the need to reinvent the wheel."

Limitless Scalability and Distribution

Knowing that an organization's intellectual capital grows constantly, Verity designed Verity Collaborative Classifier to scale linearly to handle the growth of users, documents, taxonomies and categories. Such scalability allows an intellectual capital management system to expand with the needs of a business, evolving to meet users' needs as they leverage information over time.

Verity Collaborative Classifier's platform-independent, Web-based architecture allows taxonomy management functions to be distributed virtually anywhere, lowering the total cost of taxonomies and classification applications. It can be installed easily alongside any Verity K2-equipped application to create a unified, distributable interface to manage all of the enterprise's taxonomy and classification activities.
