Extends Platform for Integrating Structured and Unstructured Information Within the Enterprise
Cambridge, England - June 10, 2004 - Autonomy Corporation plc (Nasdaq: AUTN; LSE: AU.), a global leader in infrastructure software for the enterprise, today announced the launch of Autonomy Directed Navigation, which integrates with Autonomy's core Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL). Autonomy's Directed Navigation delivers highly accurate results by guiding users through the navigation process to provide advanced real-time information discovery.
Combining structured information from databases with navigational tools and advanced concept-based search, Directed Navigation offers a way for companies to integrate valuable information from structured databases with unstructured content. Combining information found within structured fields such as product name, size, manufacturer and sku, with unstructured content such as product description, allows users to search and find products quickly and easily.
For example, e-commerce customers can use Autonomy Directed Navigation to enhance their customers' online shopping experience and increase the speed with which users find and purchase specific products: a customer looking for a specific wine can use a series of drop down options, such as color, grape and year, to narrow down their results and guide them to the product of their choice. For example, when they select red wine, the options appear for merlot, cabernet and chardonnay is no longer listed as an option. Furthermore, users can combine Directed Navigation with Autonomy's conceptual search abilities to ensure that users receive the most pertinent answers from the product base.
Autonomy's Directed Navigation also facilitates a superior user experience and increases productivity within the enterprise by providing users with rapid access to high quality results. Real-time navigation across multiple taxonomies, including full access to intersections of diverse taxonomy definitions, requires no additional manual intervention, making Directed Navigation an extremely efficient retrieval system. By querying the engine with the name of a "Directed Navigation" field or fields, users receive a list of all textual values that appear within the given field or fields within the documents stored in the engine. Using a customized user interface, this core operation enables users to gradually refine and validate queries from a complete corpus of data to the subset of documents that contain information highly relevant to the user's enquiry.
"Directed Navigation is another component of Autonomy's sophisticated retrieval capabilities, which allow users to select the retrieval tool that best meets their needs and allows them to have dynamic, real-time access to relevant data from a wide range of fields," said Richard Gaunt, chief technology officer and co-founder, Autonomy. "By combining Autonomy's unique ability to identify the main concepts and context of any piece of data automatically with more traditional methods, Autonomy offers a compelling solution for customers in all verticals. The ability to integrate seamlessly into Autonomy's IDOL server means that customers can leverage the benefits of Directed Navigation extremely rapidly and see increased productivity and an improved standard of information discovery."
Autonomy's unique Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL) integrates unstructured, semi-structured and structured information from multiple repositories through an understanding of their content. Autonomy grants enterprises the flexibility to use advanced information retrieval or legacy-based approaches. At the heart of Autonomy's software is its ability to process text, voice and video and identify and rank the main concepts within them. It then automatically categorizes, links, summarizes, personalizes and delivers that information. Autonomy's technology also drives collaboration across the enterprise and enables organizations to effectively leverage expertise. Autonomy's infrastructure technology is used to automate operations within enterprise information portals, customer relationship management, knowledge management, business intelligence and e-business applications, among others.
