Boston's Beth Israel Deaconess Chooses Verity Content Capture and Business Process Automation Software to Improve Medical Research Efforts

Verity TeleForm and Verity LiquidOffice to Reduce Time and Costs, Raise Accuracy Associated with Data Collecting and Reporting

SUNNYVALE, Calif - 2004-05-17 - Verity Inc. (NASDAQ: VRTY), a leading provider of enterprise software that enables organizations to maximize the return on their intellectual capital investment, today announced Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), a nationally-recognized research institute, has selected Verity® TeleForm® and Verity® LiquidOffice™ software solutions to advance and improve the collection and distribution of data from many types of research studies conducted at its Boston, Mass. headquarters, as well as numerous remote locations across the United States.

Two critical processes in BIDMC's ongoing research initiatives will be made faster and more dependable with the implementation of Verity LiquidOffice and Verity TeleForm: expediting the capture of research protocols and automating the adverse event reporting processes. Verity TeleForm provides robust content capture throughout an enterprise, while Verity LiquidOffice delivers sophisticated process automation with workflow for forms and documents.

"We chose Verity because of the proven reliability of its LiquidOffice and TeleForm products, their functionality and ease of integration," said Stephen J. Berry, PhD., BIDMC's director of academic and research computing. "Cost was a consideration, as it is anytime with a purchase of this type. However, the overall value of the Verity solutions and its strong support organization made it a worthwhile, easy-to-justify investment."

50 Percent Lower Labor Costs, 60 Per Cent Less Time

BIDMC expects to realize a 50 percent reduction in manual labor costs and a 60 percent cut in the time required to collect research protocol data through the use of Verity TeleForm. It is also projecting a further return on this investment in 18 months when it then becomes self-sustainable through fees collected from investigators who are currently relying on data entry personnel to process the forms. The application of Verity LiquidOffice to the adverse event reporting process will greatly enhance compliance with federal regulations, reduce manual labor, and enhance the document distribution process so the right information is delivered to the right person in the shortest possible time. Among the federal guidelines BIDMC will more easily fulfill is the sharing of raw data or results with other researchers, an action encouraged by the National Institutes of Health.

As one of America's leading independent medical research centers, BIDMC conducts a large number of clinical trials. Often these trials involve multiple institutions across the country. When an adverse event occurs at one site, the relevant information must be distributed quickly to all research participants, at every site. Each researcher must respond, often within24 hours. Every step of the research process has to be documented. With literally hundreds of research protocols and investigators, the current paper-based method is labor-intensive, time-consuming and not cost-efficient.

Verity TeleForm will be used by BIDMC to move its data capture process related to research protocols from a manual method, handling 200,000 paper forms annually, such as reports, questionnaires, surveys and clinical trials work sheets, to an automatic process. This manual method is a laborious process prone to error. Verity software will automate the content capture process and allow the creation of a central data collection/processing core.

With Verity LiquidOffice, BIDMC will automate the process of monitoring adverse event reports, packaging associated documentation, and distributing them to appropriate members of the research study team as well as coordinate the responses. "Verity LiquidOffice provides a framework for the adverse events reporting process," Dr. Berry said. "The report is scanned and attached to all relevant documentation, then sent electronically to all researchers for fast, thorough review. The event reporting and review process is enhanced, as researchers will be able to leverage the research information more quickly and easily."

"Beth Israel Deaconess is taking an important step with the implementation of Verity TeleForm and LiquidOffice toward making better use of its research-related intellectual capital," said Anthony J. Bettencourt, Verity's president and CEO. "The Verity content capture and business process automation software will allow researchers at this well-regarded facility to spend more time finding answers to health and medical problems and less time reporting on their progress while seeing a higher quality in those reports and a better way to share that information."

The selection of Verity TeleForm and LiquidOffice software by BIDMC is part of a long-range, large-scale effort to expand the medical center's information infrastructure, technology and capabilities. Eventually, Verity TeleForm and Verity LiquidOffice will be tied together to extend their functions into more aspects and more types of research and to other areas within the medical center.
