Verity Announces Technology Management Promotions

Mark Seamans Appointed Senior Vice President of Research and Development; Dr. Prabhakar Raghavan Named Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer

SUNNYVALE, Calif - 2004-05-04 - Verity Inc. (NASDAQ: VRTY), a leading provider of enterprise software that enables organizations to maximize the return on their intellectual capital investment, today announced the promotion of Mark Seamans to senior vice president of research and development and Dr. Prabhakar Raghavan to senior vice president and chief technology officer (CTO).

Seamans and Raghavan will both report to Anthony J. Bettencourt, Verity's president and CEO. In his position, Seamans, who joined the company with its acquisition of Cardiff Software, will have responsibility for the strategic design and development of Verity's advanced search, classification, recommendation, monitoring and analytics software as well as its content capture, business process automation and online self-service solutions that were added to the product portfolio with the recently completed Cardiff and NativeMinds acquisitions. In particular, he will determine the integration points of the expanded product line and direct development towards blending components in new and exciting ways. Dr. Raghavan, who has served as the company's CTO and also overseen various development activities, will now focus on corporate technical strategy in support of Verity's industry leadership.

"Mark and Prabhakar are two of the most dynamic, highly qualified and highly regarded technology executives in the software industry," Bettencourt said. "Together, they will shape Verity's technological future and ensure the timely development of new and improved products that anticipate the wants and needs of the different types and sizes of organizations we serve."

Seamans' last post with Cardiff was CTO and vice president of business development, with responsibility for engineering, quality assurance, professional services and support. He joined Cardiff in 1994 from NCR as vice president of consulting services. At NCR Seamans initially worked in engineering and engineering management on client/server and database application development, then in professional services designing and deploying large-scale database applications.

He holds a bachelor's degree in cognitive science from the University of California at San Diego and a master of science in engineering management from Colorado's National Technological University. Seamans was awarded the master of information technology designation from the Association for Information and Imaging Management International, which also designated him a certified document imaging architect.

In addition to his role at Verity, Dr. Raghavan is a consulting professor of computer science at Stanford University. He is the author of more than 100 papers in various fields, including algorithms, optimization, Web search and databases, and has taught courses at leading universities around the world. Dr. Raghavan has served on the editorial boards of several prestigious scientific journals and currently is editor-in-chief of the Journal of the Association for Computer Machinery (ACM). In addition, he is a Fellow of the ACM and of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Prior to joining Verity in March 2000, Dr. Raghavan worked in a number of technical and managerial capacities at IBM, conducting and leading research in algorithms and web mining. He holds a doctorate in computer science from the University of California at Berkeley and an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras.
