BOC chooses Verity K2E for knowledge management

EPSOM, UK - 2004-04-22 - The BOC Group, one of the world's leading industrial gases companies, has selected Verity's advanced search, classification and personalisation software, Verity(r) K2 Enterprise (K2E), to manage information across its external website www.boc.com and its global company intranets. Verity K2E will enable BOC website visitors and employees to find information quickly and share knowledge more effectively.

On average, BOC's corporate website alone receives more than 100,000 visitors a month. Together, these visitors effect more than six million hits a month. Other BOC business and country specific websites at least double the group's total visitor numbers and hit rates. Internally BOC needed a solution that could cope with global search across nearly 80 intranet sites and that had the ability to locate specific sites or areas of interest without employees having to trawl through the entire network. Prior to adopting Verity, BOC used individual search engines from other vendors across each of its intranet sites.

"The main aim is to help people re-use knowledge that's already in the system by making it easier to find", says John Hobday, BOC's eBusiness knowledge manager. "We also want to encourage better working practices and innovation among employees by supporting them in their search for information across the organisation. The priority is to extend the boundaries of each employee's information resources and enable them to gain access to content that they didn't previously know existed."

BOC underwent an extensive selection process involving a rigorous comparison procedure. Verity was eventually chosen from a shortlist of three companies.

"Most of the solutions we looked at could provide accurate search across our sites but the most important criteria for BOC were management and security", continues Hobday. "It's crucial for us to address our global requirements while maintaining centralised control over the management of the search facility. Verity's model means that we can distribute the search to local servers around the world but manage it from the UK".

"Verity also offered the best solution for our security issues. Most of the content held within our intranets is made available across the Group. However there is another level of restricted access information that is held in shared document repositories. Verity respects these levels of authorisation and controls access to this information through verification".

"BOC is a large organisation and its employees have a wealth of untapped knowledge and information", says Simon Atkinson, managing director of Verity GB. "We look forward to beginning this project by integrating search capabilities across BOC's internet and intranets. By adding additional capabilities such as categorisation and personalisation in the future, we could make an even bigger difference to the way in which BOC captures and uses its intellectual property".

About BOC

Serving two million customers in more than 50 countries, the BOC Group is one of the largest and most global of the world's leading gases companies. It employs over 44,500 people and had annual sales of just over £4.3 billion in 2003.

For more than a century BOC's gases and expertise have contributed to advances in many industries and aspects of everyday life, including steel-making, refining, chemical processing, environmental protection, wastewater treatment, welding and cutting, food processing and distribution, glass production, electronics and health care.
