Virage® to Participate in Video Analysis and Content Extraction (VACE) Research Program Sponsored by the Advanced Research and Development Activity (ARDA)

SAN MATEO, Calif., January 19, 2004 - Virage, Inc., a wholly owned division of Autonomy Corp. (Nasdaq: AUTN; LSE: AU.) and a leading provider of rich media communication and content management software, today announced its participation in the Video Analysis and Content Extraction (VACE) program sponsored by ARDA. The 2 year applied research project brings together research teams from Virage, ALPHATECH, The University of Maryland and M.I.T. to collaborate on the development of video content extraction technology.

The initial focus of the VACE Program is to develop automatic detection and recognition technologies from various video-related sources including indoor and outdoor activities, unmanned air vehicles, and television news broadcasts. Over time, VACE technologies aim to provide significant improvement in indexing and retrieval, understanding, image processing, data mining, filtering and selection, and storage and forwarding mechanisms.

"Applied research such as VACE is not only a great opportunity to develop the core technologies needed by the intelligence community to process and analyze the large quantities of critical video data, but also helps to drive the development of state of the art commercial applications," said Dr. Ric Upton, vice president, Strategic Development at ALPHATECH. "Our goal is to provide the tools to automatically analyze the underlying meaning of human interaction within video data so that it can be more easily indexed, summarized and understood."
