Analyst Report Describes Autonomy's Dominant Position Providing Both Automatic & Manual Technology Approaches

San Francisco, Calif., October 2, 2003-Autonomy Corporation plc (Nasdaq: AUTN; LSE: AU., Nasdaq Europe: AUTN), a global leader in infrastructure software for the enterprise, today announced that Giga Research, a wholly owned subsidiary of Forrester Research Inc., has published an Idea Byte, "Enterprise Search Vendors: Incumbents" by Laura Ramos, director, Forrester Research, which describes Autonomy's pioneering automated pattern recognition technology that offers a range of choices to process unstructured information (full report at: http://www.autonomy.com/analystpapers/GigaEnterpriseSearchIncumbents.pdf)

The report describes Autonomy's growth from launch in 1997 to dominant position today, and as pioneering the use of automated pattern recognition technology, that "gives Autonomy an advantage in developing capabilities like active matching and real-time profiling for recommending documents or experts related to a selected text". The report states that Autonomy "shines when finding interesting or unanticipated matches between texts or digital assets is important and needed to drive collaboration, customer support or knowledge sharing activities across the enterprise". The report further notes that to provide a choice to automated approaches, Autonomy also delivers rule-based, keyword matching technology and a Legacy Compatibility Module that allows direct migration from prebuilt queries and relevance rules.

The report also confirms that Autonomy continues to acquire key OEMs like BEA, Business Objects, Citrix, Computer Associates, Sybase and Vignette, where it's taken some business from the other incumbent recently.

"Autonomy provides a core infrastructure technology for information management, providing a choice of automatic or manual approaches. We are pleased that our contributions are recognized by the enterprise information management market which requires much more than manual legacy black-box technologies can provide to meet complex business requirements" said Mike Lynch, CEO and co-founder of Autonomy. "By bringing advanced pattern-matching technology, analytic tools and applications for regulatory compliance, Autonomy will continue to shape the direction of enterprise information management."

A parallel Planning Assumption "Enterprise Search Vendor Landscape Minimizing Risk in a Changing Market" also published by the same author, Laura Ramos, director, Forrester Research, highlights Autonomy's leadership position, detailing Autonomy's growth from launch in 1997 to dominant position today, achieving almost double the revenue and number of customers than its next nearest 'challenger' as defined by the report. (full report at: http://www.autonomy.com/analystpapers/Enterprise_Search_Vendor_Landscape_Minimizing_Risk_in_a_Changing_Market.pdf)

Autonomy's unique Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL) is meeting the needs of the enterprise by integrating unstructured, semi-structured and structured information from multiple repositories through an understanding of their content. At the heart of Autonomy's software is its ability to process text, voice and video and identify and rank the main concepts within them. It then automatically categorizes, links, summarizes, personalizes and delivers that information.

According to Ramos, organizations preparing for content centric applications and adaptive workspaces should include information management in their core systems architecture. "As composite applications and business processes emerge, the ability to access, mine and discover relevant information from a wide variety of sources as they evolve still requires specialized, non-database technology that automates the redundant, labor intensive work of organizing, classifying and delivering complex unstructured information to humans and transactional systems."

The report describes the likely changes in the enterprise search market over the next several years, including the emergence of analytics and reporting as key features in solution offerings as well as new enterprise solutions that include regulatory compliance and litigation/legal discovery. Autonomy has embarked in these areas, offering visualization and clustering analysis tools that allow users new ways to view information. Aungate, a division of Autonomy, offers the world's first automated, solution for enterprise compliance and litigation support. Founded on Autonomy's IDOL, Aungate provides a technology platform that integrates with enterprise communications technologies to power real-time analysis of telephone calls, emails and instant messages.
