The October 21, 2003 deadline for GPEA is causing many federal government agencies to evaluate solutions for reducing paper-based processes, and in doing so they are discovering the operational benefits, which increase exponentially with the size of the organization. About the Government Paperwork Elimination Act
The Government Paper Elimination Act (GPEA) was enacted by Congress on October 21, 1998. It amends the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995 to require the Director of the Office of Management and Budget to: (1) specifically promote the acquisition and use of alternative electronic information technologies that provide for electronic submission, maintenance, or disclosure of information as a substitute for paper and for the use and acceptance of electronic signatures; and (2) provide a mandatory information resources strategic management plan that describes progress in providing for the acquisition and use of such technologies as a substitute for paper and for the use and acceptance of electronic signatures.
