Verity Offers Sophisticated Arab Language Support for K2 Enterprise

Enhances Arabic Text Search Capability of Software

SUNNYVALE, Calif - 2003-08-12 - Verity Inc. (NASDAQ: VRTY), a leading provider of enterprise software that helps organizations maximize the return on their intellectual capital investment, today announced the availability of Verity's Arabic Morphological Analyzer (VAMA) to provide advanced Arab language support for its Verity® K2 Enterprise (K2E) software.

With this enhanced support for Arabic content, the full capabilities of Verity K2 Enterprise are now available to companies doing business in Arabic speaking countries as well as government organizations with interest in Arabic content. Applications from Web-based self-service to homeland security will yield better search results and user satisfaction with the powerful linguistic capabilities.

"Verity K2E with the sophisticated Arabic language support is a superior solution for global enterprises," said Anthony J. Bettencourt, Verity's president and CEO. "VAMA deals with the complexities and ambiguities of the written Arabic language in a unique way that significantly enhances the ability to search and analyze documents containing Arabic text."

VAMA, the company's enabling technology for advanced search in Arabic, dramatically improves the accuracy of search results among Arabic documents and helps to speed the analysis of Arabic text. Other currently available Arabic locales rely only on tokenization to look through text to identify individual words. These do not recognize variations or stems of the same word, which in Arabic could lead to misinterpretation of the text. Arabic is a semantic language that is very different from other languages of the world. The Arabic spelling system is based on consonants, and omits most vowels, which gives rise to a wide degree of ambiguity. For example, the same word ‘qdm' can be read as "qadama" meaning arrived, but it can also be read as ‘qadam' meaning foot, or "qaddama" meaning offered or presented.

VAMA understands and analyzes word stems, tenses and the context of the search query. It provides highly accurate, dictionary-verified stemming, and also chooses the correct stem for each word, according to its sophisticated context analysis feature, which is particularly important because there are often up to 15 interpretations per word in Arabic.

In addition, VAMA can analyze the tense of each verb, a critical feature of data-mining applications. It also has an Arabic thesaurus that enables searching for the different Arabic equivalents of a word in one search query; and it can be supplemented with a cross-linguistic Arabic / English reference system, and an automatic transliterator for queries that contain Arabic names in English spelling, such as Moustafa, Mustafa, Mustapha, all yielding the same original Arabic form of the name.

VAMA adheres to universal standards to aid in multi-language document exchange, including Unicode Standard version 3.2. Verity's support for the Unicode Standard extends to how the core search engine handles the internal character sets of the locale. VAMA provides both single byte and multi-byte character set encodings and supports them internally within the core search engine without any loss of information. This means that regardless of whether documents are encoded in native language character sets or in Universal Standards such as Unicode, VAMA provides full support of all data.
