EPSOM, UK - 2003-07-14 - The Scottish Executive, the devolved administration of Scotland, has selected Verity's advanced search and classification software Verity K2 Enterprise 5.0 (K2E), to manage information across its corporate intranet. Verity K2E will enable the intranet's 6,000 users to find and access over 4 million documents quickly and effectively.
The Scottish Executive has responsibility for a budget of £20 billion and includes departments such as health, education, justice, rural affairs and transport. With a focus on delivery and an emphasis on evidence-based policy making, it is crucial to keep employees up-to-date with the correct information - but it is a challenging task. It is also vital to capture and manage the knowledge held by the organisation and to know where this knowledge is located.
The Scottish Executive received a number of proposals for the deal but Verity was selected as being the most advantageous and the best value solution for the Scottish Executive's particular requirements.
The Scottish Executive has outgrown the disparate systems it was using prior to purchasing Verity K2E and needed better and more consistent use of its data. Verity was selected for the strength of its search methods, its scalability and its ease of use. It offers a variety of ways of searching across documents, including phonetic matching, category drill down and expansion, adaptive ranking and a configurable thesaurus.
The first step will be to index existing information using Verity, which currently exceeds 4 million documents. The Verity platform will also provide the foundation for the organisation's move to an electronic document management system which has to be in place by 2005.
Working with public sector customers, Verity has gained extensive experience in developing complex taxonomies for handling diverse governmental data. Verity's intelligent content organisation feature is able to classify related names together, which can be important when naming conventions, such as for departments, change over time. Verity also provides accurate summaries of documents so that users can understand the content of a document without reading it all.
"The ability to organise, classify and find one piece of information amongst millions, and the scope to integrate Verity's recommendation tool so that The Scottish Executive can match experts across departments, will have a very positive impact on the way the organisation manages its information as it focuses on cross-cutting issues and delivery", says Simon Atkinson, managing director of Verity GB. "This deal is also very important to Verity as it adds to our significant user base in both government and the Scottish market."
About The Scottish Executive
The Scottish Executive is the devolved government for Scotland. It is responsible for most of the issues of day-to-day concern to the people of Scotland, including health, education, justice, rural affairs, and transport. It manages an annual budget of more than £20 billion in the financial year 2002-2003 that is due to rise to almost £26 billion in 2005-2006.
The Executive was established in 1999, following the first elections to the Scottish Parliament. It is a coalition between the Scottish Labour Party and the Scottish Liberal Democrat Party. The Executive is led by a First Minister who is nominated by the Parliament and in turn appoints the other Scottish Ministers who make up the Cabinet. Executive civil servants are accountable to Scottish Ministers, who are themselves accountable to the Scottish Parliament.
