University Of Southern California Selects Virage To Enhance Their Distance Education Network

SAN MATEO, Calif. - June 16, 2003 - Virage, Inc. [NASDAQ: VRGE], a leading provider of video and rich media communication software, today announced that the University of Southern California (USC) has implemented Virage software in support of the School of Engineering's Distance Education Network (http://den.usc.edu). The Distance Education Network (DEN) was established to extend the reach of the School of Engineering's instructional and educational content. With their advanced webcasting system, the School of Engineering enables full-time working engineers the opportunity to earn up to 20 different graduate degrees entirely from a distance.

"With more than 5,000 engineering students, more than 800 of whom attend courses remotely, we were looking for ways to make our instructional content more broadly available," said Binh Tran, USC's director of Instructional Technology for the USC Distance Education Network. "Webcasting was the logical choice for us because it delivers better features than satellite or microwave communications at a lower cost. By integrating Virage into our Distance Education Network, we can now offer our students the highest-quality webcast service, including accurate search and retrieval of educational content."

USC's School of Engineering was ranked as the #8 engineering graduate school in the nation, as rated by US News & World Report in 2003 and 2004. Currently, the School provides live webcasts of all engineering classes. In addition, the School makes the webcasts available on-demand immediately following each class. Along with the live and on-demand webcasts, the School provides online teleconferencing, chat, and discussion boards to boost interactivity between professors and students. Using the Virage software, the School is able to capture and index all video content and related media assets, such as Microsoft® PowerPoint® slides, online chat, and discussion board information. The video and associated information is stored digitally in a central repository for students, professors and faculty to access. In addition to streaming graduate lectures, the School also streams special series lectures, professional development courses, and discussions in both live and on-demand format.
