Autonomy Launches New Division - Aungate

Providing Total Compliance Management solution for Enterprise Email, Instant Messaging, Voice Mail and Litigation Support

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - June 16, 2003 - Autonomy Corporation plc (Nasdaq: AUTN; LSE: AU., Nasdaq Europe: AUTN), a leading provider of infrastructure software for the enterprise, today launched Aungate, a division of Autonomy offering the world's first automated, solution for enterprise compliance and litigation support. Founded on Autonomy's unique Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL), Aungate provides a technology platform that integrates with enterprise communications technologies to power real-time analysis of telephone calls, emails and instant messages.

Aungate's technology has been tailored to specifically help facilitate compliance and governance discovery and analysis processes, which are being now legislated by procedures such the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, and the Basel II Accord. Aungate technology will also help to rapidly address the challenges faced within the 80% of financial institutions that do not yet meet existing SEC compliance regulations.

Aungate provides an integrated solution to automate the analysis of these unstructured information sources in real time, enabling executives to spot trends in communications and easily pinpoint potential information misuse. Recent corporate scandals involving fraudulent accounting and conflicts of interest within financial service institutions have raised awareness about the significance of internal corporate communications. As enterprises struggle to manage the overwhelming volume of electronic communications generated by their workforce, in forms such as email, instant messaging, corporate intranets and electronic documents, executives are looking to new developments in technology to manage this information and minimize risk.

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act requires executives and auditors of public companies to document and certify the effectiveness of internal controls and procedures related to financial reporting whilst the Basel Accord II will require banks to supply detailed data to assess risk. However, the effective controls executives require to better avoid material misstatements and facilitate compliance, and the analysis required to identify the risks associated with business processes demand visibility and knowledge of the content of telephone calls, email and instant messages. Given that these account for more than 80% of daily traffic inside the enterprise, real time analysis of this content is no longer a nice-to-have, but is indeed a necessity.

"Businesses are scrambling to define the new requirements for compliance and governance, and there is a need - now more than ever - for companies to look to technology to assist in their compliance efforts," said Lee Geishecker, research vice president, Gartner, Inc.

Aungate's technology addresses a broad spectrum of digital content issues including content security which today includes protecting the organization against virus emails and the proliferation of spam. In this arena, Aungate includes an adaptable, scaleable option for filtering unsolicited emails. Unlike content filtering approaches, which rely on keywords, Aungate uses a unique combination of technologies that enable it to automatically form an understanding of content as it arrives on the company network, and to effectively determine the difference between genuine business-critical information and time-wasting junk.

"With vast quantities of electronic data in the enterprise, effectively managing electronic communications, minimizing risk and meeting governance objectives is a key initiative for global organizations in every industry," said Mike Lynch, CEO of Autonomy. "Aungate not only automates the process of discovering and managing all of this information, but allows it to be used efficiently and effectively, without concern for compromising industry-specific regulations and legislation or corporate policy."

Aungate's Total Compliance Solution encompasses the following areas:

  • Aungate Investigation Manager - Automatically monitors employee-to-employee communications and provides high-level analysis tools to enable management to really understand what communications have taken place.
  • Aungate Voice Compliance - Automated call understanding, clustering of contact trends and automatic alerting of non-compliant calls.
  • Aungate Email and Instant Compliance - Accurate monitoring and detection of e-mail and instant messaging content and automatic routing of non-compliant content.
  • Aungate Web and Spam filtering - Industrial-strength network protection through automatic filtering and detection of unwanted content.

Autonomy's unique Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL) integrates unstructured, semi-structured and structured information from multiple repositories through an understanding of their content. Autonomy grants enterprises the flexibility to use advanced information retrieval or legacy-based approaches. At the heart of Autonomy's software is its ability to process text, voice and video and identify and rank the main concepts within them. It then automatically categorizes, links, summarizes, personalizes and delivers that information. Autonomy's technology also drives collaboration across the enterprise and enables organizations to effectively leverage expertise. Autonomy's infrastructure technology is used to automate operations within enterprise information portals, customer relationship management, knowledge management, business intelligence and e-business applications, among others.
