Upgraded core algorithms power upgrade to Autonomy Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL)
San Francisco, Calif. - 2 June, 2003- Autonomy Corporation plc (Nasdaq: AUTN; LSE: AU., Nasdaq Europe: AUTN), a global leader in infrastructure software for the enterprise, today announced a significant upgrade to the core algorithms that power Autonomy's Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL) Infrastructure technology. This upgrade comes as a result of Autonomy's continuing investment in leading edge research and development, in which Autonomy has increased its investment by over 40% since 2000. It also underscores the continued maturing of the IDOL platform and commitment to an open technology philosophy that provides complete choice, with a full range of automatic and legacy manual controls.
Autonomy's strength lies in a unique combination of technologies that employs advanced pattern matching techniques (non-linear adaptive digital signal processing), utilizing Bayesian Inference and Claude Shannon's principles of information theory. The innovative high-performance pattern-matching algorithms that encapsulate these technologies are at the heart of Autonomy's Dynamic Reasoning Engine (DRE) software that power the IDOL platform. The DRE performs core information operations, which have set unparalleled precedents in powering sophisticated contextual analysis and concept extraction, enabling solutions for the categorization, summarization, personalization, hyperlinking and retrieval of all forms of information. The algorithms that found these technologies have enabled a number of 'world firsts', including (i) the automation of text, voice and video in a single infrastructure solution; (ii) real language independence; (iii) innovative applications such as 'Active Matching' which automates the understanding of content an individual user is reading, writing or sharing and (iv) the Intelligent Data Operating Layer itself.
The release of upgrades to Autonomy's core algorithms announced today, increases still further the unrivalled scalability of Autonomy's technology, which is not reliant on manually configured rules sets or third party thesauri and already powers some of the world's largest information processing operations. In addition, IDOL now delivers a host of performance enhancements and extensions including:
Dynamic Reasoning Engine vs 4 (DRE4) increases the speed and sophistication of real time analysis, and now provides amongst a host of other functionality, enhanced indexing performance; increased querying; improved storage; new logging features; enhanced field processing; split data storage; enhanced XML operations; multi-language support and simultaneous multi-security operations; Communication with DRE 4 is implemented over HTTP using XML and can adhere to .Net/ SOAP standards.
IDOL interface (application layer) Portal-in-a-Box vs 4 (PIB4) now provides a suite of comprehensive analytics interfaces for accurate and 'next generation' automated navigation. These include new and enhanced automatic/manual query and results interfaces that power personalization and collaborative operations fusing text, voice and video sources in a single operation. These also deliver accurate measurement of content processes that can be directly aligned to human capital management and behavioral change processes inside the enterprise.
For users who wish to employ manual legacy operation techniques and editing features Legacy Compatibility Module vs 3 (LCM3) now provides as standard, advanced Proximity Keyword Search; Soundex; Metadata Search; Federated Search and Parametric Search.
Full details and specifications of these upgrades are available at www.autonomy.com.
Autonomy's IDOL technology enables Integration Through Understanding (ITU), which allows applications to communicate with each other without any manual effort involved in setting up complicated connectors, or the use of meta-data. Autonomy's technology makes enterprise systems "data-agnostic" and provides automated efficiencies never experienced before. Because Autonomy's technology is entirely modular, organizations can progressively extend their IDOL deployment to meet new information challenges as they arise. Before IDOL, enterprises had to cobble systems together into an incoherent information network that was expensive to build and maintain and these latest additions to the platform further enable the enterprise to rapidly integrate their various technology systems, repositories and networks.
"A key selling point for Autonomy is that its model is not a black box. Autonomy understands information and this makes Autonomy a different kind of technology company, since most IT vendors understand technology," says Martin Butler, Founder and President of Butler Group. "This distinguishing factor is much more important than you might suppose. Autonomy is ahead of the market - while most of us continue to dig deeper into the technology pit, only giving scant thought to the information and data we are processing, Autonomy is pioneering technologies that extract information from the data and technology resources we have invested so much time and energy in."
"Autonomy continues to develop and leverage its core technology to power solutions for managing unstructured information and people," said Mike Lynch, CEO and cofounder of Autonomy. "The latest upgrades to Autonomy's powerful and well-proven algorithms provide 'next generation' automation that matures the IDOL platform whilst further enabling additional manual controls of content for those that require them. With the ultimate aim of course, of creating competitive advantage in the marketplace, we believe that these upgrades will further enhance product utilization, particularly where Autonomy provides the key infrastructure backbone across a wide range of software sectors, and those industries that Autonomy continues to dominate including Intelligence, third-generation mobile telephone systems, video-management, elearning and voice and telephony products."
