Bowling Green State University Selects Virage For New Video Streaming Service
University Completes First Phase Of Campus-Wide Digital Video Project
SAN MATEO, Calif. - May 28, 2003 - Virage, Inc. [NASDAQ: VRGE] today announced that Bowling Green State University (BGSU) has selected Virage software for their campus-wide Digital Video Streaming Service (DVSS) project. BGSU recently completed the first phase of the DVSS project, enabling students, faculty and staff to access digital video media from any classroom, office, residence room, or lab via Bowling Green State University's new Gigabit Ethernet network. Virage is a leading provider of video and rich media communication software.
"Unlike many other institutions that limit digital video access to select locations, Bowling Green State is one of the first universities to deliver streaming video to every one of our buildings," said Anthony Short, project director and director of Television Learning Services at BGSU. "With help from Virage, content such as classroom lectures, presentations, and guest lectures, is available whenever and wherever a faculty member or student needs it."
BGSU initiated the DVSS project in order to migrate from a 30-year old, closed-circuit television system that provided limited access to content. The first phase of the DVSS project included the installation of the DVD-quality, full-screen, full-motion video capabilities in each of its buildings. Each classroom system is fully controllable by the instructor. To take advantage of the new equipment, the University recently began transforming, where rights are available, its existing tape-based video content to a digital format using Virage SmartEncode™ software. The content is then stored in a centralized digital video repository that provides 24/7 access to content while also providing secure access control. With the new system, students and faculty are now able to search for specific content by keywords or topics.
Firelands College, a Bowling Green State University branch campus, also benefits from the DVSS project. To support distance learning and content sharing at the branch campus, the University installed a direct video connection that provides Firelands College students and faculty with direct access to the central repository. In phase two of the DVSS project, the University hopes to expand the repository with video assets owned by other departments and also add support for other digital media, such as PDFs, Microsoft® Excel spreadsheets and Word documents. The University expects to complete this phase of the DVSS project in Fall 2003.
