Verity to Enhance Nationwide Health Care Support for Kaiser Permanente
Largest Nonprofit Health Plan's New Member Web Site to Feature Verity K2 Enterprise
SUNNYVALE, Calif - 2003-04-29 - Verity Inc. (NASDAQ: VRTY), a leading provider of enterprise software that helps organizations maximize the return on their intellectual capital investment, today announced Kaiser Permanente, America's largest nonprofit health plan, will use Verity® K2 Enterprise (K2E) as the search and retrieval technology on its new integrated Web site, designed to serve its members and healthcare professionals as well as the general public. The new site is expected to launch in the third quarter of 2003.
The ability to help consumers and health care professionals quickly and accurately find answers to myriad questions is a crucial function on this Web site. The impetus for this major overhaul of the organization's online capabilities is a desire to provide a higher and more satisfying level of service while realizing operational efficiencies. Kaiser Permanente serves 8.4 million members in nine states and the District of Columbia. It has 29 medical centers, 423 medical offices, 130,000 employees, and 11,000 physicians.
"Kaiser Permanente selected Verity K2E to be the search and retrieval technology on its new Web site that will serve all units of the organization because Verity K2E excels in every critical measure," said Anthony J. Bettencourt, Verity's president and CEO. "When dealing with large quantities of health care and health advice information, it is crucial to have a high-performing technology to support this challenging task. Verity is proud to help make Kaiser Permanente's online presence a benchmark of the health care industry."
Health care sites must comply with regulations on how information is presented to consumers, particularly on public sites. As the new Kaiser Permanente site will contain open and controlled access of its own as well as licensed content, such as a health encyclopedia, Verity's user-based security capability will also play an important role.
The brokered architecture of Verity K2E will provide Kaiser Permanente's new integrated Web site with fault-tolerance and scalable search capability to ensure that users can find information quickly and easily 24x7. This architecture is also J2EE-compliant, so it meets the organization's IT standards.
Verity's parametric selection capability, which allows users to refine their search results by drilling down specific parameters, holds high appeal to Kaiser Permanente. For example, members will be able to find the health education class that they are looking for by its location or subject.
