Forbes.com Selects Autonomy's Technology for Web Site Management
San Francisco, Calif., March 11, 2003-Autonomy Corporation plc (Nasdaq: AUTN; Nasdaq Europe: AUTN; LSE: AU.), a leading provider of infrastructure software for the enterprise, today announced that Forbes.com, homepage for the world's business leaders, has chosen Autonomy's technology to enhance the information-rich public Web site: www.forbes.com. Autonomy's technology will automate the retrieval, delivery and hyperlinking of original articles and documents from Forbes and Forbes.com, as well as content from numerous news and information partners.
Forbes.com has a wealth of information for its readers that is constantly changed and updated. The company chose Autonomy to provide Web site visitors with a more efficient and accurate method for retrieving the more than 1,500 Forbes and Forbes.com stories on the site each day, including news feeds from partners such as Reuters. Because Autonomy's technology analyzes unstructured data such as e-mail, Web pages and documents and recognizes the conceptual connections among those sources, it can quickly deliver the appropriate information to the end user.
"Speed was the principal driving force behind our choice of using Autonomy technology within our Web site," said Michael Smith, CTO of Forbes.com. "Our readers need to be kept abreast of business developments around the globe when they happen, and as our content changes and is updated, Autonomy gives users the ability to retrieve that content quickly and accurately."
"New media companies are dependent on the accurate and timely delivery of information," said Mike Lynch, Autonomy CEO and founder. "Each day there are thousands of articles that can give companies an important advantage in their market, and Forbes.com realizes that turning disparate pieces of information into a comprehensible resource is essential to serving its customers and allowing their employees to do their jobs effectively."
Autonomy's unique Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL) integrates unstructured, semi-structured and structured information from multiple repositories through an understanding of their content. Autonomy grants enterprises the flexibility to use advanced information retrieval or legacy-based approaches. At the heart of Autonomy's software is its ability to process text, voice and video and identify and rank the main concepts within them. It then automatically categorizes, links, summarizes, personalizes and delivers that information. Autonomy's technology also drives collaboration across the enterprise and enables organizations to effectively leverage expertise. Autonomy's infrastructure technology is used to automate operations within enterprise information portals, customer relationship management, knowledge management, business intelligence and e-business applications, among others.
