Verity can do it for B&Q
EPSOM, UK - 2003-02-10 - B&Q is using Verity's K2 Catalog to power search and classification on DIY.com, its interactive ecommerce site. Verity K2 Catalog enables B&Q to offer its customers high quality search and navigation, ensuring that its visitors find the products they want quickly and effectively.
Verity and B&Q have built new taxonomies and upgraded the search facility, ensuring that customers receive more relevant results without experiencing information overload. The enhanced search and classification functionality in Verity K2 Catalog means that customers can browse more accurately using two complementary processes of finding information. In addition, the Typo facility identifies and rectifies likely spelling mistakes and the Thesaurus facility builds in rules for recognising words spelt differently, e.g. barbecue, barbeque, BBQ.
B&Q chose Verity K2 Catalog after customers indicated that search was an important means of navigation and requested that results be more accurately classified for ease of use. For example when searching for a drill, previous searches would have returned results listing stock that had an association with drills. Now a search for drills will return departments and categories such as power tools or hand tools. Customers benefit from an improved search facility but can also follow their line of enquiry through the tailored classification.
"Our customers have led us to revise the way we do search", says Matt Louth, applications development manager, B&Q. "The success of this Verity implementation has already been proven by the significant increase in usage and conversion to sales from website searches. We will continue to make improvements based on the ongoing feedback that we receive.
"When we decided to overhaul the search facility we looked at other vendors in the market and we're confident that Verity's solution suits our needs best. We have a longstanding relationship with Verity. The company has always been responsive and proactive and it also has the technology to help us keep developing and improving."
This is Phase One of an ongoing improvement process for the B&Q site. The search facility now offers basic recommendations to customers who cannot buy online. For example DIY.com does not sell fencing. Prior to the K2 Catalog implementation customers would receive a no results found note. Now the result explains that fencing is not stocked at DIY.com but it does provide a link to the nearest store. The ultimate aim is to completely reduce the number of no results found pages and to ensure that customers are always offered something relevant to their enquiry.
"B&Q has already received some great customer feedback and encouraging figures on turning browsers into buyers", says Simon Atkinson, UK managing director of Verity GB. "We are now looking to steadily develop B&Q's implementation of Verity K2 Catalog, building in parametric search and offering additional content and better advice linked to customers search results".
