Virage To Highlight News Monitoring and Video Surveillance Applications At The Government Video Expo 2002 Conference

Live Demonstration At Virage Booth #727 With Partnering Companies Network Appliance and TGS

SAN MATEO, Calif. - December 2, 2002 - Virage, Inc. [NASDAQ: VRGE], a leading provider of video and rich media communication software, today announced that it will address its newest intelligence applications for real-time news monitoring and video surveillance at the Government Video Expo 2002 Conference in Washington D.C. on December 4th and 5th.

Having received funding from the United States Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) in 1996, Virage continues to build mission-critical applications such as video surveillance, news monitoring and webcasting for a wide variety of government customers. The Virage SmartEncode™ products combine key-frame detection, speech recognition, audio classification, speaker identification, face recognition, and on-screen text recognition in a real-time multi-modal indexing and encoding product. At the Government Video Expo, Virage will demonstrate for the first time its newest developments in scene detection, automatic video segmentation, story and topic identification, Arabic speech recognition, and language translation. These technologies combine to offer government agencies the ability to monitor, analyze and detect data of interest from national and international television news programs in real time. Once detected, the system can generate automatic alerts, such as e-mail notifications, based on pre-defined profiles.

The Virage platform is composed of the SmartEncode family of products and the Virage Solution Server™. In addition to the intelligence applications mentioned previously, the platform also powers Virage's turnkey enterprise applications-VS Production™ for streamlining the video production process, VS Publishing™ for publishing video content online, and VS Webcasting™ for planning and producing interactive, live, and on-demand webcasts for speeches, seminars, training and online learning. All three applications will also be demonstrated at the Expo.

In October, Virage announced that the U.S. Senate will implement a system combining technology from Virage and TGS to digitally record and stream Senate proceedings on a daily basis. The U.S. Senate project, aimed at providing better access to Senate proceedings, will capture all video and audio from the Senate Chamber and then be made available for viewing, from web browsers, by all Senators and their staffs. TGS, a leading systems integrator in the field of video, audio, and data convergence, will be present in the Virage booth to discuss the U.S. Senate project and demonstrate digital conversion with custom media servers.

Virage partner Network Appliance, a leader in enterprise network storage, will have representatives on hand demonstrating its enterprise class streaming media solutions. Network Appliance's industry leading content delivery solutions are used by major enterprises and government agencies for applications ranging from corporate communications to e-Learning.

To schedule an appointment with Virage and its partners at Government Video Expo 2002 (located in Booth #727), please call +1 (650) 372-3496.

Virage serves more than two-dozen government customers worldwide and several U.S. intelligence agencies. For more information about Virage customers, please visit www.virage.com/customers.
