SUNNYVALE, Calif - 2002-11-19 - Verity Inc. today announced that Sharper Image Corporation (NASDAQ: SHRP), the specialty retailer renowned as a leading source of innovative products has selected search technology from Verity for its e-commerce website. Verity Inc. (NASDAQ: VRTY) is a leading provider of infrastructure software powering e-business sites and corporate intranets as well as e-business applications.
Verity K2 Catalog software provides advanced search capabilities for the primary website of The Sharper Image, sharperimage.com. This multi-channel retailer, who continually works to optimize the synergy among its stores, catalog and website, selected the Verity technology for its potential to contribute to the ease with which shoppers from all channels can use the benefits of the website.
"A consumer may go to our website having seen our catalog, or go into one of our nearly 130 retail stores after visiting us online. The key in each case is being able to quickly find the desired product," said Greg Alexander, The Sharper Image's senior vice president of information technology. "We have different types of shoppers on the Web. Some know exactly what they want and want to get to it fast. Other customers may have only a vague notion of what they want. Verity K2 Catalog has the ability to act as an online shopping assistant - providing advanced search and classification features to meet the individual preferences of each type of shopper."
Verity's advanced search feature helps consumers find the product that they are looking for by refining the search efforts through the use of different categories. For example, if someone is looking to spend $200 to $300 to purchase a stereo from The Sharper Image, he or she can drill down the search results by doing a search for ‘stereo' and then choosing a price-range category of ‘$201 to $300.' This makes shopping much easier, faster and more productive. Other categories include "Best Sellers," "Gift Guides" and "New Products."
Shoppers who browse before buying will benefit from Verity K2 Catalog's ability to organize the products and related information into a logical hierarchical structure. The "see more like this" function is similar to a salesperson recommending products to customers.
"The Sharper Image is a retailer that has been innovating for 25 years," said Anthony J. Bettencourt, Verity's president. "By leveraging the search and classification capabilities of Verity K2 Catalog, The Sharper Image is ensuring that the Web-based sales experience will be as satisfying and productive as its catalog and retail store operations."
In making its online search function more helpful and more effective, The Sharper Image anticipates an increase in its online purchase conversion rate - turning browsers into buyers. It points to the ability of Verity's software to organize the products into logical, customer-oriented categories. "If more relevant choices are presented, we believe consumers will be less likely to abandon their shopping and search efforts," Alexander noted. "Verity K2 Catalog should really enable us to help the shopper find what they want." In addition, the retailer expects to use search results and patterns to help make merchandising decisions involving which products to feature or group together.
