Mexico's Yellow Pages Turns to Verity for Online Presence

Verity's Advanced Search and Classification Technology Becomes Central to Directory Service's E-Business Initiative Innovative Linking of Search Results to Online Ads

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - 2002-10-08 - Verity, Inc., (NASDAQ: VRTY), a leading provider of infrastructure software that powers enterprise and e-commerce portals as well as e-business applications, today announced implementation of its advanced search and classification technology, Verity K2 Catalog, by Anuncios en Directorios S.A. (ADSA), the producer of Mexico's Yellow Pages directories, or Sección Amarilla.

ADSA, a subsidiary of TELMEX, the largest telephone services provider in Mexico, recently launched an e-business initiative to offer new services and conveniences to advertisers and directory users through its Web site, seccionamarilla.com.mx. Search was seen as central to this new directory service, but ADSA's vision extends beyond basic search. Its marketing slogan for this effort reflects that: "Mucho, Mas Rápido" or "Much More, Faster."

"To be a success, the online version of Sección Amarilla has to have a high quality, advanced search and categorization solution that provides the right information even if a user does not know how to find it," said Rafael Castanedo, director of e-business, ADSA. "Obviously, it must work in Spanish, but it also needs to handle the myriad topics, special terms, commercial brands, even abbreviations and frequent misspellings as well as allow for quick and easy navigation to the desired listing. After an exhaustive analysis of technologies and suppliers, ADSA selected Verity to be our partner in this endeavor."

With frequent additions and changes to the more than eight million listings in the ADSA Yellow Pages, an intelligent content organization technology that works with the directory service's existing categories and classification rules is a requirement along with the ability to quickly index new content in real time. Verity K2 technology gives ADSA a flexible and accurate classification solution that combines automation with domain expertise, which can yield up to 99 percent classification accuracy. Verity's intelligent classification technology also contributes to taxonomies that are constructed rapidly and accurately. Extensible Markup Language (XML) is used to populate the taxonomies to facilitate search by category for a satisfying and successful search process even by individuals with little knowledge or understanding of what they may be seeking.

"ADSA's online vision includes a growing array of innovative marketing services for advertisers and enhancements for directory users," said Anthony J. Bettencourt, president, Verity Inc. "ADSA is able to realize this e-business strategy by leveraging the full power of Verity technology."

Besides providing listings for requested businesses, ADSA presents online directory visitors with related ads and promotional offers as well as helpful tips and news. The linkage of all this relevant information is achieved through the use of Verity technology.

The ADSA online Yellow Pages routinely experiences more than 1,000 simultaneous searches. The brokered architecture of the Verity technology allows ADSA to easily handle that demand level with fault-tolerance 24x7.

"From all technical measures, be it accuracy, time per search, monthly usage levels, functionality, scalability or reliability, the Verity technology is exceptional," Castanedo said. "We have confidence in the company's ability to partner with us to continuously improve Sección Amarilla. Verity is now assisting in the implementation of a high-speed geographic proximity search capability that will help directory users identify stores and services nearest them."
