Classmates Selects Verity's Three Tier Knowledge Management Infrastructure

Personal Networking Service Employs Capabilities of Verity K2 Catalog Software

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - 2002-09-24 - Verity Inc. (NASDAQ: VRTY), a leading provider of infrastructure software powering corporate intranets and e-commerce sites as well as e-business applications, today announced that Classmates Online Inc., a personal networking service connecting friends, family, military and work colleagues, has selected the software maker's three tier knowledge management infrastructure to help its members search, find and connect with others.

At the center of this multi-faceted initiative is Verity K2 Catalog, a version of the company's K2 software that is well suited to e-commerce environments. It fully integrates the three tiers of the knowledge management infrastructure: Discover (search), Organize (intelligent classification), and Connect (personalization).

"Verity is more than a provider of technology that enables Classmates' members to search, find and connect; it is also a partner that understands the concept under each," said Glenn Godden, Classmates' chief technology officer. "Classmates works to reduce, if not eliminate, the six degrees of separation that keep people apart. Verity grasps this idea better than any other vendor in its space as evidenced by the company's work on social networks technologies, a key component of Verity K2 Catalog's third tier."

Verity was chosen by Classmates for its understanding of the company's business practices, technology, and the challenges of its three step approach which enables members to search, find and connect.

"The opportunity Verity has with Classmates to collaborate on social networks theory and the application of related technology could be one of the most exciting business relationships our company has had," said Anthony J. Bettencourt, Verity's president. "We believe that with the use of Verity K2 Catalog, Classmates will see an even higher level of user satisfaction and operational performance."

Classmates' site is evolving from a Perl (Practical Extraction Report Language) environment to one based on J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition). Verity K2 Catalog supports both Perl and J2EE allowing Classmates to easily integrate its systems with Verity.

Classmates is a direct marketer whose goal is to deliver the right information to the right person at the right time. Verity's search capabilities help Classmates convert basic members to subscribers because members are able to easily find and connect with others.

Formed in 1995 as the result of an unsuccessful attempt to find the email address of a high school friend, Classmates is a personal networking service connecting over 31 million members. Initially focused on high schools, its directories have expanded to include kindergarten, college, military and the workplace.
