The E.W. Scripps Company Selects Verity's Software for its Core Web Sites

Enhanced End-User Experience To Increase Traffic and Improve Return-On-Investment

Sunnyvale, Calif. - 2002-09-17 - Verity Inc. (NASDAQ: VRTY), a leading provider of infrastructure software powering corporate intranets and e-commerce sites as well as e-business applications, today announced that The E.W. Scripps Company is using Verity K2 software to enhance its core Web sites. Aimed at building deeper, more meaningful relationships with its customers, Scripps (NYSE: SSP), a diversified media company that generated $1.4 billion in revenues in 2001, is expanding its deployment of Verity's advanced search and intelligent classification capabilities to its core Web properties.

Verity K2 software is being used on such Scripps sites as the Home & Garden Television site (HGTV.com), the Food Network site (FoodTV.com) and the DIY - - Do It Yourself Network site (DIYNet.com), which jointly record more than 200 million page views per month. These deployments of Verity software have yielded faster, more accurate search results, which have led to a significant improvement in the end-user experience.

"The Verity software has enabled Scripps to improve our online capabilities, creating a relevant and personalized experience that in turn has increased customer loyalty. This led to our recent decision to integrate Verity software across our remaining Web properties," said Bryan Allen, managing director of IT Operations and Engineering at Scripps.

Verity's advanced search and classification software delivers virtually unlimited scalability, a critical requirement for Scripps. Millions of pages of dynamic structured and unstructured information are stored either on Web servers or in databases. The volume of people accessing this information on a daily basis is enormous. Verity K2 software ensures robust and reliable search and classification, regardless of the volume of traffic or amount of information.

"We look forward to working closely with Scripps as we extend our K2 software to their roster of core Web sites," said Mike Zuckerman, vice president of marketing at Verity. "Verity's powerful search and classification capabilities are an ideal match for this sort of demanding, mission-critical application. Verity is excited about the opportunity to help improve the Internet experience for millions more people."
