New Research Highlights Autonomy as the Comprehensive Information Infrastructure Solution
Recommends Shift to Intelligent Infrastructure for Information Management
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 13, 2002 - Autonomy Corporation plc (Nasdaq: AUTN; Nasdaq Europe: AUTN; LSE: AU.), a leading provider of infrastructure software for the enterprise, today announced that a recent research report reveals a fundamental need for enterprise utilization of intelligent infrastructure, such as Autonomy's technology. The report from Giga Information Group, a leading advisory research firm, titled "From Data Processing to Information Management: The Need for Intelligent Infrastructure," highlights significant opportunities for the hardware and software industry to increase revenues and growth by adopting operating systems that address how employees work and interact with information.
The report is available at http://www.autonomy.com/Content/Forms/Registration/TheNeedforIntelligentInfrastructure.pdf.
The research cites the limitations of computers today as data processing tools, rather than information management tools, because the computer has little ability to understand content or context. The computer must be able to understand user interactions with information, their interactions with other people and their changing roles at work. In addition, it needs to understand content and then integrate it.
A fundamental shift is required at the core operating system or framework level to meet these requirements and to allow the computer to serve as true information management tools that increase employee productivity. As new operating frameworks allow the computer to be more of an efficiency tool, businesses will purchase more for the strong return on investment.
"New computing environments that learn from the physical and information environments, adapt to the needs of their owners and provide content in context will help move the computing industry to its next level of penetration," said Daniel W. Rasmus, vice president, at Giga Information Group, in his report.
The research highlighted Autonomy because it has the implementation that currently reflects the kind of evolving new layer of functionality that would be driven by introducing new principles, and an associated framework, into information environment design. Autonomy's Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL) integrates information from multiple repositories through an understanding of the content. At the heart of Autonomy's software is its ability to analyze text and voice (in any language) and identify and rank the main concepts within them. It then automatically categorizes, links, personalizes and delivers that information to users based on their interaction with the system. The technology is already used to automate these operations within enterprise information portals, business intelligence, customer relationship management, knowledge management and e-business applications.
"Enterprises are already tapping into the benefits of intelligent infrastructure by using Autonomy's IDOL," said Richard Gaunt, chief technology officer and co-founder of Autonomy. "We are delighted to be highlighted in this report. It substantiates that Autonomy's technology improves business practices and is leading this crucial shift towards intelligent information management."
