Gale® Turns to Verity Software To Help Organize Educational Content
Leading e-Information Publisher Relies on Verity to Classify and Manage Selected Online Content
SUNNYVALE, Calif. - 2002-08-06 - Verity, Inc., (NASDAQ: VRTY), a leading provider of infrastructure software that powers enterprise and e-commerce portals as well as e-business applications, today announced the selection of its Verity K2 Enterprise software by Gale®, a business unit within the Thomson Learning division of The Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC, TSX: TOC), to help the e-publisher's editorial team organize the company's growing collection of content in intelligent, intuitive and easy-to-navigate categories for millions of end-users worldwide.
As a world-leader in e-information publishing for libraries, schools and businesses, Gale requires its content to be organized in the most precise manner possible so the millions of students, library users, and business people who access Gale products can intuitively find the information they need. This is particularly challenging since as many as 30,000 articles are added to Gale's proprietary databases daily. The company creates and maintains more than 600 databases that are published online, in print and in microform.
Gale chose Verity K2 Enterprise for its content organization capabilities, which combine automation with domain expertise to deliver the most flexible and accurate classification solution. Most notably, Gale will take advantage of Verity's automatic classification capabilities, including its third-generation Logistic Regression Classification (LRC) technology, to accurately and automatically create the rules that define categories. Gale officials note that its in-house editors' domain expertise will be used to customize rules, complementing the superior automation of Verity's LRC technology.
Gale is known for its editorial expertise, which requires manual classification of articles from more than 7,000 periodicals into as many as 40,000 categories and sub-categories. With plans to expand the volume of content and grow its business even further, Gale's decision to utilize Verity will enable it to augment its classification efforts in a more cost-effective manner.
"Verity's rich history of best-of-breed technology and experience were important considerations in Gale's decision to choose Verity K2 Enterprise. More than 24 percent of American households with school-aged children have access to Gale products and more than 10 million Web pages are accessed in Gale's databases each day," said Anthony J. Bettencourt, president, Verity, Inc. "The capabilities of Verity's LRC technology will aid the research efforts of students, families, and business people every day."
