Autonomy Announces New Agreement With UK Government

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) will implement Autonomy's technology to build a cross-governmental knowledge infrastructure for the UK biotechnology community

CAMBRIDGE, UK - July 4th, 2002 - Autonomy Corporation plc (Nasdaq: AUTN; LSE: AU.; Nasdaq Europe: AUTN), the global leader in infrastructure software for the enterprise, today announced that the UK Government's Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has chosen to deploy Autonomy's infrastructure technology to power a new portal focussing on UK Biotechnology, called 'Information Biotechnology' or 'iBio'.

iBio is a new initiative in joined-up government, and is designed to ensure that the UK continues as a driving force in developments in biotechnology. The project is actively supported by The Office of the e-Envoy, and is funded by the 'Invest to Save Budget' (ISB), a Treasury initiative that finances innovative partnership projects across government and the public sector. Autonomy's proactive technology will assist the Government's drive to champion this fast rising sector, and will work to ensure that international measures affecting biotechnology in the UK are fully taken account of.

iBio is an outward-facing resource targeted at end-users in the commercial and academic biotechnology communities, and will also provide lay information to the public. Autonomy's software will power the automation of a number of information operations including the aggregation and classification of data from 14 different government departments and research councils, as well as many other publicly funded organizations. The end result will be a powerful and comprehensive source of information on all aspects of governmental activity in the biotechnology sector.

By deploying Autonomy's technology, the iBio portal project will effortlessly integrate multiple sources of information, and automatically categorize and handle the data with minimal input from the contributing organizations, allowing the DTI to create pain-free joined up government.

Mark Phillips, Head of the iBio Portal Project today commented, "The DTI is delighted to announce the purchase of Autonomy's software to power this groundbreaking development in joined-up government. We look forward to providing a comprehensive resource for the UK's biotechnology community, and beyond, without the extensive manual input that such a resource would normally require."

Richard Gaunt, CTO and Co-Founder of Autonomy stressed the company's enthusiasm at working with the DTI on this new venture, "Autonomy is proud to have been chosen for yet another project with the UK Government. We feel this clearly demonstrates the significant value added by our software in knowledge-rich areas where up to the minute information is a critical driver of success."

Autonomy's unique Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL) integrates unstructured, semi-structured and structured information from multiple repositories through an understanding of the content. At the heart of Autonomy's software is its ability to analyze text and voice (in any language) and identify and rank the main concepts within it. It then automatically categorizes, links, personalizes and delivers that information. Autonomy's infrastructure technology is used to automate operations within enterprise information portals, customer relationship management, knowledge management, business intelligence and e-business applications, among others.
