My Cat Eats Grass. Is There Something Missing in Her Food?

Revamped Web sites for The Iams Company take new direction to educate consumers, steer clear of fun and games

DAYTON, OHIO - 2002-07-01 - The question may sound far-fetched, but actually is not. The Iams Company, manufacturers of Iams® and Eukanuba® Dog and Cat foods, receives more than 800 calls each day to its Consumer Care Center with questions like this and more from consumers concerned about pet nutrition.

Now these callers can have some of those same nutrition-related questions answered online at www.iams.com, www.iamsco.com and www.eukanuba.com. Iams recently transformed its Web sites to reflect a sharp focus on delivering specific details about pet nutrition.

The individual sites interconnect to offer details about pet lifestage and lifestyle nutrition information. Additionally, the retooled Web sites provide a wide array of nutrition-related insight on topics ranging from dental care to hairball relief, obesity to skin and coat health, and puppy and kitten care to joint health for senior dogs.

"Our customers are highly dedicated to their pets' health and well-being, and we are committed to providing them with consistent, reliable pet nutrition insights, along with the customer service they have grown to trust and expect from Iams," said Bryan Brown, vice president of external relations for Iams.

Meet Anne, Iams Consumer Care Virtual Representative

Maintaining a commitment to the Iams customer-service hallmark, the new sites feature a consumer care virtual representative or "vRepTM" named Anne, created with NativeMinds' technology. At the touch of a button, Anne is programmed to answer thousands of pet-nutrition questions.

Visitors to the sites simply enter nutrition-related questions, and Anne will warmly provide customized nutritional information or suggest a call to the company's toll-free number to talk to a "live" representative for a more tailored answer.

Ask her what to do for a finicky eater, and she will provide counsel about calorie requirements and tips for coaxing a pet to eat. Ask her what to do if a pet is throwing up, and she will advise the browser to contact a veterinarian. Ask her what formula to feed a healthy, active, medium-sized-breed puppy, and she will show you the specific formulas best suited to the growing puppy's nutritional needs.

"Pet nutrition and consumer care are the cornerstones of our business, so we're fortifying our Consumer Care Center with an online presence - Anne," said Brown. "Anne will further enhance our customer service offerings as we provide more ways for consumers to find answers to their questions."

No Sock Puppets Here

The newly revamped Iams and Eukanuba sites are not about fun and games or online gimmicks. But, if it is straightforward nutrition information that browsers seek, these sites are where they will find it.

For instance, the Web sites feature a Nutritional Fact Book, which is an interactive tool to determine the right nutrients and brand formulas for a pet's size, age and species. For example:

• If owners are worried about pet weight, they can click on the interactive chart and discover if their cat is beating the battle of the bulge … or not.

• If they want to better understand why their dog should not consume milk, they can examine the visual depiction of the digestive tract. Taking a look at how truly delicate it is quickly demonstrates how changes in the diet can disrupt a dog's health.

• If a cat eats grass, owners can learn why and obtain tips about increasing fiber in the diet.

• If a new owner wants to know what to expect in terms of how fast a puppy will grow, a close look at the growth chart will help.

"Our new sites are all about what our company knows best," said Brown. "Premium pet nutrition and premier consumer care join forces at www.iams.com, iamsco.com and www.eukanuba.com to offer our customers the ultimate in customized, practical and easy-to-understand pet nutrition knowledge."
