Autonomy Announces Support For New BEA Weblogic Platform 7.0

New Portlets for BEA WebLogic Portal Provide Automated Classification and Intelligent Navigation of Enterprise Information, Expertise Profiling and Collaboration

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - June 25, 2002--Autonomy Corporation plc (Nasdaq: AUTN; LSE: AU., Nasdaq Europe: AUTN), a global leader in infrastructure software for the enterprise, today announced support for BEA Systems' (Nasdaq: BEAS) BEA WebLogic Platform 7.0™, the industry's first unified application infrastructure platform. In addition, Autonomy announced ten portlets that can be seamlessly integrated with BEA WebLogic Portal™. The portlets include the Agent Portlet, Community Portlet, Profile Portlet, Expertise Locator Portlet, Similar People Portlet, Hot News Cluster Portlet, Breaking News Portlet, 2D ClusterMap Portlet, Spectrograph Portlet, and Retrieval Portlet.

Autonomy provides a complete range of JSP Portlets that deliver automated information aggregation, personalization, collaboration and retrieval. Together BEA and Autonomy provide customers with a solution to build portals with advanced personalization, collaboration and retrieval features that allow users to make faster and better-informed decisions.

In addition, Autonomy's Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL), enables BEA WebLogic Server™ to tap into business critical content regardless of where the information resides. Autonomy's unique infrastructure technology integrates information from multiple repositories through an understanding of the content. At the heart of Autonomy's software is its ability to analyze text and voice (in any language) and identify and rank the main concepts within it. It then automatically categorizes, links, personalizes and delivers that information.

"BEA is a global leader in providing application infrastructure software, and BEA WebLogic Portal and BEA WebLogic Server provide an excellent framework for unlocking the business value of information contained in disparate corporate repositories," said Mike Lynch, co-founder and CEO, Autonomy.

"WebLogic Portal is a single, unified portal framework that simplifies, personalizes and lowers the cost of customer, partner, and employee access to information, applications and business processes," said Pat O'Haren, senior director of product marketing, BEA Systems, Inc. "WebLogic Portal in conjunction with Autonomy's portlets will allow our customers to save money and time by eliminating the need to manually tag and categorize information."

BEA WebLogic Platform 7.0 incorporates new portal technologies, user tools and partner applications to help ease sharing enterprise-wide knowledge, help reduce the time and cost of enterprise portal integration, and serve as the application infrastructure platform for cross-enterprise portal initiatives. Autonomy's portlets are designed to allow BEA customers to seamlessly add additional functionality to their portals.

  • Agent Portlet allows individual users to create their own personalized information channels using natural language, keywords, Boolean phrases or by example. The agents continually monitor and automatically alert the user in real-time as new information becomes available.
  • Community Portlet allows users to view and copy relevant agents created by their peers. In addition, it allows users to send an email to a similar agent owner. The portlet combines the benefit of collaboration and the reduction of duplication of effort.
  • Profile Portlet automatically creates a profile of each user based on the concepts within the documents that the user has been tracking with their agents. Profiles are automatically updated to reflect current interests.
  • Expertise Locator Portlet allows users to find people who have been dealing with a specific subject by simply entering a description of the subject. The portlet returns all agents, profiles and names of users who own the agents.
  • Similar People Portlet notifies a user or other people in the same organization of other users who have been using the same type of documents. This helps users avoid wasting time searching for information that may be available and enables them to co-ordinate their work with that of their colleagues.
  • Hot News Portlet identifies the main topics or clusters of information within an organization. This allows the organization to obtain instantly a high-level view of the entire knowledge base and to identify gaps in the information employees need for their jobs.
  • Breaking News Portlets identify what is new within the organization's information base. By taking cluster analysis from a previous time period and comparing it to a current one, the portlet can automatically identify and track information themes and alert new areas of interest trends in subscriber groups.
  • 2D ClusterMap Portlet provides a visualization tool to show information clusters. It enables automated information clustering, title generation, summarization and hyperlinking of content.
  • Spectrograph Portlet is a Java-based user interface that displays relationships between clusters on successive periods and sets of data.
  • Retrieval Portlet uses Autonomy's unique concept-matching technology and allows content to be searched in any language and any format, wherever it is stored and presented with automatic hyperlinks in real-time to similar information.
