Virage Announces Technology and Sales Alliance with EMC

SAN MATEO, Calif. -- April 29, 2002 - Virage, Inc. (NASDAQ: VRGE) today announced it has entered into a technology agreement with EMC Corporation to integrate the Virage software platform with the newly announced EMC Centera content addressed storage (CAS) solution. EMC's Centera represents a new software-driven storage architecture built to address the unique information storage requirements of long-lasting, unchanging digital objects such as video. Virage is a leading provider of video and rich media communication software.

As part of the agreement, Virage will integrate its core platform with EMC's Centera to provide scalable, high-performance storage for each Virage software solution: VS Webcasting, VS Learning, VS Publishing and VS Production. The integration combines market-leading applications for digitizing, managing, retrieving and distributing video and other rich media assets with a storage infrastructure that can meet the high security, performance, and reliability demands they require. Integrated product solutions will be available in May 2002 through Virage professional services.

"Given the nature of our software solutions, it's not surprising that Virage customers are generating enormous collections of digital media," said Dave Girouard, senior vice president of marketing and strategy at Virage. "For many customers, this content will continue to grow into multiple terabyte or even petabyte-sized collections. We know that many of our customers are asking for a reliable solution like Centera that will allow them to preserve and re-use these mission critical assets in the future."

The combined solution provides improved communications and productivity, significant cost savings, and secure and reliable digital content management for corporations, media & entertainment companies, universities and government agencies worldwide.

"Virage is providing some of the most exciting enterprise rich media software applications available," said Tom Heiser, vice president and general manger, Content Addressed Storage at EMC. "Centera's ability to provide fast access to content, while still maintaining its integrity makes Virage applications even more practical and scalable today."

Virage software solutions include:

VS Webcasting™ - a solution for planning and producing interactive, live webcasts as well as on-demand searchable events

VS Learning™ - allows organizations to create, manage, publish and view rich-media training courses, online learning applications, presentations and briefings

VS Publishing™ - allows media & entertainment companies and others with branded content to turn their video and other rich-media content into compelling Internet programming

VS Production™ - a solution for professional video production that streamlines the production workflow from content acquisition to distribution
