Virage Introduces New Solution to Automate and Streamline Professional Video Production

LAS VEGAS--April 8, 2002-- Virage, Inc. (Nasdaq:VRGE), today announced VS Production(TM), an integrated software solution for professional video production. The new software from Virage streamlines the video production workflow from content acquisition to distribution. By automating acquisition and providing desktop access to frame-accurate, low-resolution video, VS Production helps broadcasters and other video professionals reduce operating costs, improve programming quality, and speed time to air.

"Many facilities are transitioning to server-based video,'' said Dave Girouard, senior vice president of marketing and strategy for Virage. ``But most have yet to enjoy the benefits that a managed digital environment can offer. We've put together a simple, elegant, and cost-effective content management solution that is the foundation of a networked production environment. Whether you're considering an all-digital workflow or a hybrid tape scenario, Virage can help you create better content in a fraction of the time, at a fraction of the cost."

VS Production begins by centralizing and automating the acquisition of incoming video content, whether from tape, satellite feed or digital transmission. Using the Virage SmartEncode(TM) process, content is simultaneously indexed and encoded into frame-accurate MPEG-1 and broadcast-quality MPEG-2. Next, VS Production provides browser-based search and review of all available content, including desktop access to frame-accurate MPEG-1. In addition, the software allows any user to assemble and preview frame-accurate playlists right from the desktop. Playlists can then be exported as an edit decision list (EDL) to a variety of popular edit systems. After editing, finished content packages can be added to the system for final review and approval.

"Virage has extended their expertise in professional video environments to create a solution that delivers immediate bottom-line savings,'' cites Kevin Ivey, CEO of media consulting company The Ivey Group. ``By allowing anyone with a browser to quickly review available content and make edit decisions themselves, VS Production streamlines the communication between writers, producers and editors. The result is that communication and collaboration are greatly improved and the workflow is more efficient."

Based on the award-winning Virage Rich Media Application Platform, VS Production is scalable and reliable, meeting the rigorous demands of 24/7 professional video environments. VS Production features include:

"Virage is a leading provider of software solutions to the media and entertainment industry. We are pleased they have selected our SpectreView products," said Martin Sebborn, CEO of Internet Pro Video (IPV). "SpectreView is the industry standard video browsing technology for broadcasters, and together Virage and IPV offer these customers a very powerful solution."

Virage also announced support for the Grass Valley Group ContentShare(TM) platform for distributed media asset management. Support for ContentShare ensures that the new Virage software is compatible with a variety of Grass Valley products as well as those of other ContentShare-compliant vendors. During the acquisition phase, Virage can command, configure, and control encoding with the Profile XP products. In addition, VS Production allows users to search and browse for any content on a Profile XP server. And finally, VS Production supports export of OMF edit decision lists to Grass Valley News Edit systems. Support for ContentShare in the new Virage solution means that customers can depend on significant cross-product interoperability between our products in the future.

VS Production is the fourth integrated software solution announced in recent months by Virage. In December, the company introduced VS Webcasting(TM), a software solution for producing and managing live and on-demand webcasts, and VS Publishing(TM), a solution for automated rich media web publishing. In February, Virage announced VS Learning(TM), an enterprise application for rich media training and e-learning.
